MAKE THOSE ADS GO AWAY!

Today, for no apparent reason, whenever I hit “pause” on a program that I’ve DVR-ed, the screen promptly switches to ads for this ridiculous “Currently” thing.  I didn’t ask to have these ads popping up, I don’t want to see them, and I want them to go away.  Does anyone have any tips on how to make these things disappear FOR GOOD????

The only way to remove them is to disconnect the internet from the receiver and lose On Demand, start from the beginning and paying for PPV with the remote.  This has been going on for months even maybe a year now.

OK—how would I know if we have “On Demand” or not?  My husband is usually in charge of the DirectTV account (b/c he had it before we got married) and I’m not sure if even he knows what all is in the package.

Almost all packages allow you to access the On Demand version of the sat channels they start with a 1,  244 syfy's On Demand channel is 1244.

We’ve never used those channels—just the ordinary ones.  I’ll have to call tomorrow and see if they can be removed as the previous reply suggests.

On demand channels are a free perk and can't be removed unless you disconnect the internet.

I’m not even sure if the Internet is connected to our TV.  Guess I’m facing a learning curve on this thing….

The advertisement based screen saver is downloaded from the internet. This has nothing to do with your TV being connected to internet, but your DirecTV itself.

On Demand is the term for all the features you get from your setup being internet connected. All packages have access to On Demand, but not all channels have an On Demand version. For example SyFy satellite channel is 244, but SyFy On Demand is 1244. So any channel in the 1000s is from On Demand.

Likely you have a setup with a newer Genie (such as HR44 or HR54) that has a WiFi option built in to connect to internet. You would need to disconnect from internet to revert back to logo based screen saver. Menu > Settings > Internet > Advanced and reset Network Defaults so it forgets WiFi name and password.

As a note anything already recorded on the DVR may still have advertisement info injected, so would only fix the annoyance going forward.

IS it normal for a screen-saver to show up after only a few seconds?  B/c that’s what these ads are doing when I pause things that I’ve DVR-ed and am watching.  Instead of, say, a frozen image of a crab boat from “Deadliest Catch”, all of a sudden I’m staring at some random thing for “Currently”, and it only started today.  I’ll definitely see if the disconnecting works—will do that tomorrow as it’s late at night here.

It is normal as that is a change made quite some time ago for DirecTV. If your DirecTV equipment is internet connected, the basic screen saver is replaced with the advertisement one.

Personally I am not bothered by advertisements themselves, as is DirecTV's available space. I don't spend my time watching the screen saver as I am busy with whatever I paused for.

My only complaint is it seems to kick on the screen saver too quickly, especially if you have paused to check something out on the screen. Either they need to increase the time before it kicks in, or better yet have a menu option so you can set your preferred time delay before it starts.

I have never seen these screen savers before today; previously, when I would pause something, the image on the TV would simply freeze (looking like a still photo) until I un-paused it (I do not usually pause for very long).  Now, today, after only 4 or 5 seconds, these things were showing up, and I find it both annoying and intrusive.  I’ll try multiple different methods of removing them once I get the chance to work on the problem tomorrow; your suggestions sound very useful so hopefully one or more of them will work.

With the advertisement based screen saver, disconnecting your DirecTV setup from internet is the only way to get rid of it. They built it with no way to opt out otherwise.

As for previously when paused, it should not just freeze the screen. After so much time it should have had the company logo moving around the screen as that is the default screen saver.

Just strange that the new type screen saver only just started. Perhaps someone in the household recently decided to connect the setup to internet so only now had a chance to download to the box.

The amount of DirecTV ads and promotions is really startling. Just pause a program for a second and you get a DirecTV ad or promo for upcoming programs or to add channels....VERY ANOYING!

A huge banner that you have to navigate past EVERY TIME you access your recordings. The banner wants you to purchase programs.

@fpaulneva

You already stated this in a previous thread. No need to keep bringing back older posts as it cloggs up the forum.
