Must upgrade from R15 but dvr is full and want to save content is there a way?
Got the blue banner message urgent message to upgrade for free but not sure how long I got till sd channels or box kaput. Tried calling but guy I talked to who didn't really seem to understand what value a dvr is (kept saying I could rerecord) our accents didn't quite sync up. Which made me Think I could just stream too and even go with another company. I've been with DirecTV for 30 years so I was enjoying the dvr for the travel library I made.

The only way is to connect composite cables to it and a DVD recorder or VHS recorder or to a computer with a USB capture device and software. You can keep the R15 but sooner or later it will stop working or the hard drive fails.

By "rerecord" he probably meant doing so to build your recording list back up. DirecTV has no way to save recordings from any replaced DVR. You can try the old fashion way using a recordable DVD player or VCR.
DirecTV announced years ago they would be shutting down their MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. Should have already completed, but there have been some challenges (internal and anything affected by the pandemic) the last couple years. The writing is on the wall as SD-only TVs haven't been made in over a decade.
You can still take a HDDVR with you while you travel. But your mobile dish will need to be replaced with either a slimline SWM dish you use on a tripod, or the Winegard Trav'ler for auto-aiming which is more expensive.
Catch up on the recordings of your current DVR before replacing it as the content will not copy to the new box.
Is that R15 your only box or do you have any others?
