Problems with satellite TV and not sure if it is DirecTv
We have been having problems with most of our channels with code 771.
We live in Southern Maryland and have both East and west coast channels. We only get the code on East coast channels and some HD channels. Have checked all our connections and equipment and all seems OK. But is there a possibility that our satellite alignment is off, somehow. It has been set up the same for years (6+). I have reached the end of my rope because this issue comes and goes and am never sure where (DirecTv or us) the problem is.
Whatever help or suggestions someone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

99% of a 771 is a dish alignment problem.

You should be able to go in and see what your sat signal percentage is. If your dish signal stats are low then your dish needs to be realigned. I would contact Directv customer service and tell them that you have been having this issue for a while they should be able to send someone out to fix this issue for you.

Sounds like an alignment problem.
What are the models of each box you have?
Do you have the issue on each box, or just certain ones?
Did you red button reset or any other troubleshooting beside checking connections?

I have tried a couple of the easy troubleshooting suggestions. The problem is on both DR'S though. 90% of what we get the 771 code are HD channels. We can watch the HD channels on SD.
We have East coast and West coast channels and the west coast HD channels work fine. It is the east coast that we have problems with.
And it isn't all the time. Everything worked fine 2 days ago, recorded with no problems and could watch everything. Then yesterday it was a few channels and today it is almost all of them.
Thank you for your help, everyone!

HD channels are beamed from different satellites than the SD channels. This is most likely a dish misalignment issue. Call DirecTV for a service visit.

HR23 is still a valid model as is MPEG-4/HD capable. If it is going bad and needs a warranty replacement, then a HR24 would be the option as HR23s have been gone for a long time. Though HR24 stock is expected low as they were pushing forward with setups that only use the new multiswitch (SWM), which would be anything Genie.
Those regular HDDVRs do work with the regular Genie line (HR34, HR44, HR54). Though if you still only have 1 TV like you mentioned in a previous post, I suggest avoiding the Genie. That way you don't get and pay for a service you cannot use (Whole Home DVR) but is required as the Genie is DirecTV's Advanced Whole Home HDDVR.

@merlin88merlin DIRECTV's policy is that each TV should have a DIRECTV receiver and the customer should be paying $7 per month (TV Access Fee) for each additional TV. They will try to push you toward spending more money monthly on receivers.
Just to confirm, you have ONE DIRECTV receiver (HR23) and hook it up to multiple TVs? And, with the RF Modulator, you are able to control the HR23 from other TVs? I would just see if you could upgrade to the HR24. If they push you to get a Genie, decline the upgrade and stick with the HR23.

you are able to control the HR23 from other TVs? No. main tv/receiver in living room controls.
I was thinking that have a C41W could move that to one TV or another (as it's wireless), as needed and have control there - hooking up to HDMI port w/it and not get feed from coax connection.

You can't use a C41W without a Genie HR44/54 or HS17Genie2, some people use IR repeaters to control the receiver.

Tech was out and realigned the dish and replaced a couple connectors. he did not try to push for upgrade of receiver. :)
