Using DirecTV app on iPhone w/o connecting my Reciever to WiFi
I tried connecting my Directv reciever to my home wifi and I had to turn it off becuase it started downloading every episode of my saved series over my limited 4G internet connection at home. Now I am trying to use the Directv app on my phone and iPad while travleing and it will not work. I dont need access to my DVR, that I understand is not a reasonable request if I choose not to connect my home receiver to the internet. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to have my reciever connected to WiFi and NOT download every series it sees in my recording list? I use my DVR to record dish delivered programs, it saves my WiFi. If I have to use Wifi i might just as well cancel Directv and Stream everything!!!

Not sure what that means.
So the app does work, then, yes?
Well, that’s why. All my series are set for first run only on a specific channel. Since you don’t want to record on demand, there really is no reason to keep your receiver connected to the Internet. You can always connect when you need it on the internet, just leave it disconnect by default.

There is no requirement for your receivers to be connected to the Internet in order to use the Directv app. What isn’t working? As for downloading “every series it sees in my recording list”, you must have something set wrong in the way the series recording is defined. None of my series recordings ever download anything from on demand, they only record the satellite channel.

My inability to watch is closed, user error. Had to hit the link for more options and then a button for watch on phone worked. As far as recording goes many of our series are setup to record everything by desing, we didnt see the earlier seasons. This is seems to trigger the unit to stream all seasons it can find when we want it to record when the satallite schedule brings the program down. I cant find any settings to correct this. We have a limited data plan of 125G/mo and cannot afford to be recording streamed content. When we choose to watch streamed content we do that intentionally. If someone knows how to make my DVR not record via wifi download EVER I am all ears!

“Inability to watch is closed”. Initially I could not watch a live channel in the Directv app. I eventually found two buttons. Watch on TV and watch on phone. Watch on phone worked as desired.
Regarding no reason to connect to WiFi unless I want to record on demand. If I record a show via satellite to my DVR I could then stream it from my DVR to a remote location. This is a double data impact as the show must leave my house over WiFi and be picked up by another data connection in a remote location to my mobile device. This is acceptable to me since I am not home when remote and my home data plan has room to serve my DVR content to me. Beyond that use case I agree, no advantage to WiFi connected DVR if I wish to only record satellite programs.
Bottom line. I would like a setting in my DVR series setup to “only record satellite delivered content”. Or “include on demand programs that match my series definition”. To use WiFi connected DVR I must be in control of what it records, satellite vs on-demand internet stream.
make sense?

I would be interested in Directv Stream but not another subscription. I can also-cart streaming services. If Directv wants to be viable they need to find a way to bundle a bunch of channels for a single price that is better than buying them aka-cart. The world is changing and I for one am done with the buckle and dime streaming battle. The “cable” concept was all about getting a bunch of content from one place for one price. We need that in the streaming world and the first aggregator of streaming subscriptions will win the battle.

How do you do that? That capability no longer exists in the Directv app. I am able to stream from my DVR too but I have a Slingbox connected to the DVR and stream via the Slingbox. Only the Slingbox needs to be connected to the internet in my setup.

Have never tried to pull a program from my in-home DVR. If that is not possible then there is zero reason to ever connect my system to internet. I guess I know my answer. Continue using streaming services and the available "log in through TV provider" option until that is also taken away! Thanks all. I have my path forward. Wanted to take advantage of DTV but clearly my use case is not a good fit for the product.
