Watching DirecTV recordings on I-phone
I have DirecTV and record sports on my home DVR.
Does it make sense that I can't watch these recordings on my I-Phone via app when away from home??

I did switch from DirecTV Satellite to DirecTV Stream, mostly because trees began blocking my satellite reception. But I've been very happy with DirecTV Stream. User experience is similar to DirecTV satellite equipment. But you can take your streaming devices with you anywhere in the USA. We travel in an RV with a Roku and can view live TV and our recordings while on the road, provided we have decent internet service. That's probably the main downside .... do you have fast internet download speeds (ideally better than 50Mbps download). And, of course, DirecTV Stream is not the cheapest streaming service.

Yes, it makes sense. The new app currently has a bug preventing anyone from watching DVR programs, whether it be in your home network or away from home. No one here knows when DIRECTV will decide to release an update that fixes these bugs as we are customers like you.

DTV dropped support for streaming from the Genie when outside of your home network years ago, unknown if the new partners will bring it back.

You can indeed view your recordings from any location with streaming services, like DirecTV Stream or YouTube TV.

So have you switched to a streaming service? Is there any downside?

I chose DirecTV Stream because it's most like DirecTV Satellite.

It’s definitely not a ‘waste’ per se but at the same time it won’t likely speed anything up as I’m sure DIRECTV is aware of such bugs in their app and is working to update the app as soon as possible. However, it’s always worth a shot. The direct number for the satellite department is in my greeting below. If you’d like to speak to a more professional agent about the manner say ‘cancel’ to the robot to be sent to the loyalty /retention department.

Streaming DVR from out-of-home is not supported. It is a not a bug but a feature removed years ago. Haven't heard anything about the new co-owner bringing it back.
The 2nd/3rd generation Genie (HR44/HR54) did have MobileDVR where you could temporarily (30 days) copy a recoding to a mobile device (smart phone/tablet) for on the go watching. This like streaming recordings in-home (so connected to your home network) is not currently working in the new app. There is no timeframe on a fix.
