I don’t fully understand how whole home viewing works. I’ve done what is required in settings with the remote for our Genie tv. Do I take that remote with me to watch my direct tv shows on my old smart tv which is in my basement?

Whole Home DVR allows all HD and HDDVRs, as well as Mini Genie Clients, to watch the recordings of all your HDDVRs.
So on any of your other boxes if you go into the recording list, it will include the recordings of the Genie box (or any other HDDVR that you have).
To be sure all is compatible, what are the models of every box you have? Was this DirecTV or self-installed?

Whole Home doesn't stream to non DTV receivers.
