Apple TV app
Can the dtv streaming app be added to the Apple TV app? We have Sony smart tvs and the stb app is not on the Google App Store.

It can be added to the Apple tv box device. Apple tv app is not a device. Also, Directv stream isn't available on google app store yet for Android tv boxes. I'd suggest you get a Dtv Stream box. That's what I have and it's better then the apps.

Thanks. I know the Apple TV app is not a device. I do have the dtv app on two other Apple TV’s already. And I did try to say the dtv app is not on the Google App Store.

What are the advantages of the box over the app? Is the box included for free when subscribing? If not how much per month is a box?

(It would have been useful if Apple hadn't used "Apple TV" as the name for a device, an app, and a service... But then AT&T and now DirecTV have done similarly stupid naming.)
I assume you were asking if DirecTV Stream was available as an "Apple TV Channel", subscribed to and viewed through the Apple TV app? If so, the answer is no. (Nor is it available as a Prime Video Channel.)
With respect to the DirecTV streaming device, it has some advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, it supports channel numbers and a more "full featured" remote, it starts directly in the DirecTV Stream service, and it offers voice control (to an extent) - so it is targeted at the service and offers a more "cable-like" experience. On the minus side, it offers fewer third-party apps than some (not everything on the Google Android TV store), it is relatively slow (switching channels, some other things, and - in my experience - especially the voice control), some people have problems with it in some environments (it isn't as consistently "solid" as the big names), and is relatively expensive (though not compared to an Apple TV). Back when cable-like 2 year contract commitments were required, they generally provided one for free. Now, you need to by them - $120 one time payment or $5/month on a 24 month plan. Another alternative is getting one elsewhere - they generally are available on eBay used for on the order of $50, or "new" for more.

We are going to try one box for our newest tv. Cheaper than another Apple TV. We have 2 Apple TV’s on our other tv’s. The dtv stream app is not very user friendly. It’s going to get some getting used to. If we don’t like the service, we can drop it within 14 days. We still have U-verse tv for another month before the price goes up $50.
