DirecTV Stream Channel Up & Down Buttons Not Working on AppleTV App
This issue came about 3-4 days ago. I'm using DirecTV Stream Version 4.0.31 on AppleTV 4K (Model A2169 32GB, the latest version) with tvOS Version 15.4.1.
While watching TV, I used to be able to go to the next channel by clicking Right (channel up) or Left (channel down) button. All of a sudden, it stopped working, along with the "Up" button for previously watched channel list.
- When I close and restart the app, the problem still remains.
- The problem goes away when I reboot the AppleTV device. But the issue comes back as I continue to watch TV or navigate through channels (usually within an hour).
- Back and Down button still works.
- "Slide" on AppleTV remote still works for channel up/down - but that means I can only use AppleTV remote (which is not very comfortable to use, and "Slide" is quite tricky to operate)
This is really annoying, as:
- I have to go back out to Guide even to move 1 channel up or down
- I don't want to reboot the device every hour
I am not 100% sure, but it seems like it has something to do with memory management. When I click right or left button, the device blinks, but nothing happens on the application side. I also observed that when too many channels were skipped (i.e., up or down), the DirecTV Stream app would just crash.
I wonder if the current version was released about 3-4 days ago.
Please let me know if there are remedies for this issue (other than having to reboot the machine).

I just made an important observation. The left/right button for channel up/down works after rebooting the AppleTV device. Such function stops working after using left/right button for "rewind" or "fast forward". In live broadcasting, I would hit the center button, and use left/right button for rewind/fast forward.
With the latest version of AppleTV 4K, once you use left/right button for rewind or fast forward, it simply stops working as channel up/down button. It also disables the "up" button for previous channels.
Again, an older AppleTV 4K is free from this bug. I hope this helps.

I just switched to directv stream but i've been having the same issue. The right/left click does not change the channel.
Have you figured a solution on the newest apple tv?
Is there a different remote that i should be using instead of the apple tv remote?

I have three Apple TV's, all 4k. The one with the older remote will not change channels, period. There is no way to change the channel. I know its not the remote, because it works in other apps. There is something wrong with the software. That said, the newer silver remotes still work flawlessly.

@JAL123 That's interesting that you were able to get it to work on the newer remotes. For me, when i click/swipe left/right on the remote, it tries to fast forward or rewind. It doesn't change the channel.
Agreed that it's a software issue. I'm also thinking that since you can't type in the channel number that I should just use a different remote.
What do you think?

Months after I posted my original complaint about channel switching buttons, I practically gave up on using my TV remote. Only back and home button works. If I restart the app, left and right button change channels, but only until I use them for fast forward or rewind. With the AppleTV remote, the swipe button does work sometimes. But it’s really finicky and it often gets into fast forward or rewind, instead of changing channels. These issue do not exist with Roku TV. It is unique to the app for AppleTV.

DMONEY. Thats exactly what I get with the old remote. Instead of channel change I get fast forward or rewind. It has to be a software issue as the old remote works normally on all other apps and in the menus.

@JAL123 glad to hear i'm not the only one with issues. Not sure what the easiest/cheapest solution is since I have apple tv 4k's on three tv's. Maybe get a universal remote for each one? Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have 3 AppleTVs and I’ve tried all types of universal remote controllers. But channel change only works with the AppleTV’s “swipe” function, which is quite finicky. Basically “click” doesn’t change channels once used for fast forward or rewind even once.

I have the same problem. On Apple TV 4K and silver remote. Works flawlessly on my Roku. If I restart the DIRECTV stream app, it works for a few moments until it thinks I’m fast forwarding or rewinding. Although I found when I tap the < button on once and then swipe, it works.
