For those who switched from Directv to Directv Stream

Are those of you who made the switch happy?   I've been considering it for some time, mostly because the lack of rain fade, and on some channels, such as CNN international, Logo, CSpans, the picture is in HD, whereas those channels are SD only on satellite.    Also, use of apps instead of bulky equipment and equipment fee charges.   Down sides seem to be no west coast feeds, and perhaps buffering.    thoughts?

I did the switch about 2 years ago. It took a little getting used to, but find it much more convenient than satellite. I do like the DirecTV Stream box the better than the device apps. The voice command is nice, and the Stream box is the only device you can do direct entry of channel numbers. With the apps you have to scroll through all the numbers to go from low channels to higher ones. But, you can also have the channels show alphabetical, instead of numerical.

Another great feature is when you have two homes, it is much easier going back and forth between them, and still having your service.

We switched last December when trees blocked our reception of one of the satellites. No regrets. We have fast Gbit fiber internet service and DirecTV Stream has been flawless. We saved considerable money since there's no $7/mo fee for receivers. And when we travel in our RV it's easy to use anywhere, provided we have decent internet of course.

Let me ask this question, @litzdog911 and @lou_do , are there any "hidden fees" in addition to the "base price" of the service, e.g. RSN fees or Local Broadcast Fees?

Not including installments for any receivers you may decide to purchase, of course.

No hidden fees. Just the price of my programming package and local taxes.

I switched as soon as Directv Stream was launched and have been happy ever since!  I would highly recommend their streaming box which you can buy from Directv Refurbished for $49.99 it saves you some money compared to the brand new boxes and you get the same warranty that they give for the new.  You can stream on other external streaming devices (Roku/Firestick, etc...) and on some smart TVs but you get a way better user experience when using the box.  It will be more like the Sat service that you are used to but you do not have to pay extra fees for more boxes and you can stream on up to 20 devices on your home wifi network and you get 3 on-the-go streams of those 3 streams you can stream 2 TVs outside of your home which is nice if you want to share to split the cost or if you go on vacation and want to take along your tv service.  I have not had issues with buffering I would definitely recommend a good strong wifi signal.  The channels are somewhat the same there are some channels that Directv Sat has that Directv Stream does not have at this time so I would definitely compare packages so that way you know if there are any channels that you would not be getting with the Directv Streaming service.  But overall as long as you have a good internet provider and your internet speed is good you should have no problems with converting to streaming!  I will never go back to Sat. or cable tv after streaming!

Thanks for all the comments so far.  They are very helpful.   We have the Old UVerse Internet 100/20.  I assume that will be more than enough and the connection never drops except of course during a power outage.

I had Directv Satellite for 17yrs, then moved and couldn't keep it b/c of trees. Had Mediacom cable after that with a Tivo. The only thing I don't like about Dtv Stream is no "tuners" like with the Genie and Tivo. Not a dealbreaker, obviously. I'm very happy with Dtv Stream compared to the satellite service and it's 100x better than cable tv. Pic quality A+++

The major issue people have with DirecTV Stream or any streaming service, is low wifi signal at their device. Because they have a 100 mbps service doesn't mean it is that at your wifi device, only if you are using ethernet cabling. When you use wifi, you have signal loss when your device is far from your wireless router, or when your signal has to go through walls, floors or doors. If this ends up an issue, it can be resolved with a wifi extender.

I have a combination of both because the DTV Satellite picture is far superior to DTV Stream.  It's much "sharper".  It also has features that Stream doesn't have like more info on shows, the buffer, no 30 series limit, and being able to see something frame by frame, and a lot more.  Then Stream has no limit on DVR recordings (except 9 months and 30 series limit) and I can watch on any TV without a box.  Of course I purchased two boxes that serves 3 TV's.  For the particular combination of services I pay about $110 x month and it gives me most everything I need.

I've observed no difference in video quality between DirecTV Satellite and DirecTV Stream, provided I have a reasonably fast internet connection.

If I didn't have Satellite Service while having Stream, I may not notice either.  But when I watch the same recorded program on each service, Satellite is visibly so much better (most of the time).  Stream just has a "softer" picture, not as "sharp".  And my internet is 600 mpbs/20 upload.

Note:  I have an HR54-700 for satellite and (2) DTV Boxes for Stream.

That's puzzling @janice805 . I also had both services for a couple of months and couldn't detect any difference in video quality. We have Gbit fiber internet.

@janice805 well I can sort of understand why that could be. Cloud-based DVR is so much more different in terms of how the customer will receive their DVR’d content. It’s certainly possible that the quality could degrade as it is being streamed.

Meanwhile, all satellite recordings are recorded locally on the DVR’s hard drive. Thus, there’s no way for the picture to get any worse.

We switched about a year ago after having satellite for about 20 years.  One of the major reasons we switched was because of the Regional Sports Fee, which is $14.99 a month in my area. The Streaming service doesn’t tack on that ridiculous fee.  We have really strong WiFi in my area so streaming is not an issue.  But the boxes are glitchy - in the sense that if I turn one box off after watching channel 269 - for example - the other boxes will turn on to that channel automatically.

I have a question about recordings. Can I move my recorded shows from DirecTV to DirecTV Stream? I am really thinking of moving over but don't want to lose the ton of shows I have saved up.
