No 1080p?

This past week I cut the cord, going with DirecTV Stream - my first experience with any streaming service.  I'm very disappointed in the picture quality on all of my local (Los Angeles) HD channels; they appear to be in 720p (with video quality set to 'Best' in Preferences) - that's a huge disappointment.  :(

Is 720p the typical 'HD' resolution of all streaming services?

Perhaps your former cable box upscaled the broadcast channels to 1080p. How is your streaming device connected to your TV? HDMI?

What is your internet speed? I've had Dtv stream with their stream box/remote for 8 months now and the picture is far superior to the cable tv I had. Could also be HDR. Do you HDR enabled on your tv or device? If so, disable it and also change the display setting to 1080p. I also use a firestick and side loaded android tv box when made those changes my pic was much better.

What device are you using ?
if using the stream box hold the - button until a system info screen comes up. You will see the channels resolution.
Most channels are 1080p except channels that broadcast in 720p like fox or espn/abc channels

@jtshep1, I've tried both a Roku and a FireTVStick - latest generation (I'm one of the 'suckers' who bought a couple of 'new' AT&T streaming players on eBay only to have both of them stuck in 'Checking for Updates')!

I don't believe I'm receiving ABC, CBS, NBC, or for that matter any other network in 1080p.

There are no 1080p broadcast stations. Broadcast stations use either 720p (ABC, Fox, ESPN, etc), or 1080i (CBS, NBC). Both are considered "true HD" resolutions.

Hi litzdog911, all that I know (for sure) is that my prior cable TV service produced a much sharper (1080p) picture than does DTVstream on every channel I've watched (especially live programming)!  Could there be a setting I'm overlooking?

@litzdog911,

I don't know if the cable box upscaled or not - I guess that could account for the difference in sharpness?   Yes, my devices are connected to the TV's HDMI input.

Hi Ludwick577,

My internet speed is 500Mbs/500Mbs (fiber).  My TVs are from 2013-2014 and don't show HDR in settings, but they are set to 1080p.

If no 1080p why when I hit the info button on my Onkyo rec does it show it's receiving a 1080p signal from DTV stream? My Panny TV shows the same thing. However if I go back to my DTV satellite it shows 1080i. So somewhere in the loop something is getting upscaled or the stream is broadcasting in 1080p.

Frankly, DTV stream is a huge disappointment.  Either the voice sound don't match the picture and or the picture is a blurry mess.  Very unhappy and no help
