So, looks like I found a workaround, it's not great but it is working. I set routines on our alexa to every 3 hours and 55 minutes, 1:55 AM, 5:50 AM, 9:45 AM, 1:40 PM, 5:35 PM, 9:30 PM, and 1:25 AM to { pause firetv, device settings volume 0, resume firetv, device settings 5 }
This pauses whatever is playing, changing the volume of the echo dot takes a second or two, then it resumes the firetv and changes the echo dot volume back to original settings. This seems to be enough to convince the system that the person watching is still active and hence there.
At first, I tried changing the volume on the tv, but that wasn't enough, it had to actually interact with the directtv app itself.
