how do I turn off email notifications

Click your account and go into profile settings. Check how you want your notifications delivered. In your case uncheck all email deliveries you don't want.

You should only get email notifications if someone replies in a thread you are subscribed to or if someone uses @Evosidog to mention you directly. Go into your profile and adjust your notification settings in general or use the Action List (3 dots next to your post) to unsubscribe from a specific thread.
