Letter to upgrade equipment

I received a letter from directv saying I had SD equipment that needs to be upgraded and to call 866.963.8010 for free upgrade and installation.  I have a Genie system.  Is this a legitimate letter and phone number?

exactly which receivers do you have (model numbers)?

The letter itself sounds like a fake. However, DirecTV is shutting down their MPEG-2/SD-only feeds so some customers need to replace equipment.

If you truly have a "Genie" then it is unlikely to have anything that needs to be swapped, but not impossible. To be sure, what are the model numbers of each box you have?

Thanks for the responses.  My main genie box is a HR54 and I have two Genie minis.  The letter looks fake on the front with teal colored large bold text.  The reverse has legitimate looking small print.  If it is fake, I don’t get the reason but is a strange looking letter.

with an hr54 and two minis you don't have any SD equipment so you can ignore the letter anyway.

Are your Mini Genies models starting with 'C'? (i.e. C31). Only wanting to be 100% sure as some people have called their boxes by the wrong name (hence why model numbers were requested).

But if all you have are the 3rd generation Genie (HR54) and the other boxes are all Mini Genie Clients, then you can disregard that letter since you have no boxes that are MPEG-2/SD-only.

The reason for the letter is to get you to call a fake number and give sensitive info like a credit card or anything else to scam you. These crooks are using a real DirecTV situation to give more creditability to their scam.

Thankfully you didn't fall for it.

Until DirecTV comes out with new boxes, you don't need a mandatory swap. And the only optional upgrade to consider would be changing Mini Genie Client to an HDDVR receiver, but those are hard to come by anymore as they were pushed to a Client-only setup.
