If you are past due, but service not yet turned off, then you can call DirecTV and see if you can setup a payment arrangement. Remember this only extends back the date when the service would be shut off, not avoid late fees.
Though keep in mind the listed due date on the bill should be day 20 of your monthly service cycle. As long as payment posts to the account before the service month starts over, no late fee would happen. Otherwise the bill comes out showing the late fee and the day it would be turned off if you do not pay past due in full or have set a payment arrangement to give some extra time.

A follow-up to clarify...
Just because you have "always" done this, doesn't mean it will always be an option. There is always the possibility that they may not be able to extend it and can only follow the normal expectation of bill paid.
And this is a public forum of other customers. So guidance may be provided, but there is no account access here. For official support you call or log onto your account online for any options on that end.
