If they give you instructions to return your equipment make sure you keep good documentation because I guarantee you they will claim they didn't receive it back and bill you for it! You will have to prove it with tracking numbers. Always a battle with Directv since AT&T took over!
What models are each of the boxes? That will determine what (if anything) is returnable. The dish and everything else you own upon install.
If any boxes are returnable, then after you have canceled (and service no longer working to confirm), then you use their new return process.
How To Return The Equipment
Go to a FedEx or UPS location with your account #. No need to bring a box or label, the equipment will be boxed it up & shipped out at no charge. The process takes less than 5 minutes.
Just because it happened to you, does not mean it is guaranteed to happen to everyone else. Yes there have been too many issues with the new process, but that only affects some, not everybody. I agree it is wise to keep the receipt showing that the shipper took the boxes into their control.

The dish is yours to do what you want with. Depending on the age of your receivers, you may or may not be required to return them.
