canceling service for deceased father

What is the process for cancelling service for someone who is deceased?

They have made canceling the service and turning off autopay impossible for anyone handling the affairs of a parent who has died. What is the exact procedure for doing this. If it requires a death certificate, where do you send that. I am outraged at how difficult this is and the stress it puts on survivors is shameful.

This did not answer my question. What is the process for cancelling my dead father's account?

Call DirecTV's customer support number.

Get the voice system, say "cancel".

Let retention/cancellation agent know account owner is deceased.

Used to be agent would process and submit to back office to verify.

Since AT&T, Death Certificate is provided first to ensure valid request.

Might have to take documentation to a corporate store to submit for verification.

Any boxes that are still recoverable you take to a participating FedEx or The UPS Store for free return. You will need your father's account number to do so. Make sure to keep receipt showing they took possession of the equipment. To see if returnable, what are the models of each box?

An alternative that should be advised is that the surviving spouse may take over the account (including any remaining time on a service agreement), if they so choose. Nobody else may take over the account as it remains tied to the original account owner's SSN.
