cancellation of dtv.

rec'd email today threatening to charge me $120 per receiver,(4) unless returned.  service was terminated back on june 4 ,2020. three months later they want to charge me, except i saved email rec'd 6/13/2020 telling me no need to return please recycle and keep out of our landfills.  i find this  is poor ethics and a bad practice trying to intimidate the consumer 3 months later.  i will be forwarding to consumer affairs.  still receiving invoice for last month service even after explaining i cancelled 5/04/2020.

save everything you CAN'T TRUST THIS COMPANY.  by invoice went from $68, 88, 108 128 in consecutive months invoices and had enough after being a customer since 2003.  terrible customer service.  i tried calling to no avail.  A JOKE.

Do you remember the model numbers?  DTV no longer prorates the bill, you now pay for and receive service until the end of the billing cycle regardless of when you cancel.

if you get paid to monitor consumer posts, t could spent it's money for training customer service reps.

Model numbers would tell us if they where returnable or not.

The few employees of either company on here are on their own time and have that fact stated in a box similar to the ACE box and nobody in this customer to customer forum are paid to be here.

Wouldn't expect you to remember model numbers from months ago. But if you had a record of what those model numbers were, or if you still had the boxes to check, it could be verified if they were returnable or not.

This is a public forum of customers. There is no payment for those choosing to participate in open discussion.

You can cancel service whenever you want, but not billing. Per their Terms of Service (ToS) you pay for the full month no matter what day you cancel. Even if you cancel on the 1st day of your service month, you pay for all of it. So for example if your service month is 5/3 thru 6/2 and you cancel 5/4 then you still pay for service thru 6/2 as that is the end of your bill cycle. This has been in their ToS for almost 2 years. Here is the notice sent to us customers back in 2018 (I kept mine for reference).

Please read this if you receive DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse® TV, AT&T Internet, AT&T Phone, and/or AT&T Fixed Wireless service(s). We want to remind you that you’re billed in advance for recurring service(s) and/or programming charges and applicable fees based on the terms of your current service agreement(s) with us. Starting January 14, 2019, subject to applicable laws, we’re updating your agreement(s) to include your recurring service(s)/programming charges and fees won’t be prorated if you cancel the above service(s) on any day other than the last day of your billing cycle. Your service(s) will continue until the end of your billing cycle but you won’t get a refund (prorated credits) for any remaining days left in your billing cycle. For products not listed above, refer to their terms of service for more information.

Questions about this change? Go to att.com/ProrationPolicy for more information and to see the revised section of your service agreement(s).

you only comment on the billing arrangement.  don't you have an opinion on the practices of t sending 3month old notice asking for equipment returned and threatening monetary damages if you don't comply,  the generation of invoices with 30% increases every month for 4 months without notice.  i hope if they do that to more customers they too will leave and dtv will merge with dish.  dish far superior product, glad i left and never coming back.  looking to transfer my cell to another carrier to. t now the number 3 carrier in usa.  stock down to low $29 indicating poor performance.  my last post going to t-mobile

DTV only raises the base price once a year in January and a notice is emailed in Oct-Nov so any increases are promos ending or something else you need to compare your bills to see what is changing.

I commented on the equipment to double check if returnable or not. If they were non-returnable models then the notice of charges would be in error and needs to be corrected. If the models were returnable, the only recourse would be sending them back in (if you still have them). Normally the return time frame is 21 days, but because of Covid they did an exception to 60 days, which would explain getting a bill notice for it 3 months later instead of sooner.

DirecTV adjusts base rates annually (new rates go into effect in January) because networks keep raising their costs to the TV providers. If your bill changes 4 months in a row then something else is going on, such as discounts completing or one-time charges.

Personally I prefer DirecTV over Dish, especially because of a simplified billing model as opposed to Dish charge for things like package change, external hard drives, or increasing the cost per level of box instead of services for the account and a small flat fee for each additional TV (just look at the end of Dish's residential agreement for those extra costs). But I do understand the lead equipment-wise they were getting with the Hopper 3 (though not a fan of it being mandatory to use some of the tuners to record prime time instead of me using all my tuners as I choose). I will be keeping an eye on what they do going forward on equipment. I do still enjoy the service, but the Genie-2 (HS17) that was released with built-in restrictions I do find concerning.

my dish invoice was upfront and has been the same for last three months.  t charges for package changes just like another competitor and a rental fee per box.  don't know what you're saying easy to understand.

you mention an error should be corrected. t knows what boxes i had and sent me an email as i stated in my posting for me to dispose of properly and take care of that mess.  unethical.  that's their trash now.  3 months later they send an email demanding payment for the boxes.  that's a joke.  most ex-customers dispose of their trash after a certain period of time and t hopes i did the same so i would not have proof.  poor business practice.  i tried of companies blaming their failed practices on covid.  that's not an excuse. people are still working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DTV doesn't charge you to change your channel package.

DirecTV does not charge to change package. If you change package mid-cycle, it would prorate accordingly so you only pay for the package you had for those days. But there is no charge on top of just paying for what you have.

Getting an email to recycle all your boxes and then charged for them is a problem. I would double check the email to see if it might have referred to only certain models and not all your boxes.

If the email said all your boxes were non-returnable, or just didn't clarify model numbers, then I would call DirecTV back. When you get the voice system say "cancel". Once routed to the retention/cancellation department request a supervisor. Let them know you got an email which contradicts the non-return fee (NRF) and how you can provide it. If that doesn't work, then a BBB/FCC complaint would be the next step.

Though could you copy that body of that email into the thread (even screenshot)? I am curious on the exact wording.
