Cancelling account since March 31, 2020
I’ve been cancelling my account with direct tv since 3/31/2020. I’ve called everyday for weeks was on hold for several hours never got thru. Kept trying again and again. Even sent emails and tried to do it online but was told you can only cancel your service over the phone. Someone please tell me how am I suppose to do that if no one picks up the phone.
Today I get en email telling me they are going to charge me for equipment and other charges. (Edited per community guidelines). I’ve had their equipment in a box waiting for someone to tell me yes my service is cancelled like I wanted and yes they what their equipment back.

DirecTV does not do support by email. And specifically canceling may only be done over the phone. Like other companies they require a live agent to discuss the situation to try and retain your business.
You are only charged for equipment if it is not returned after cancellation. However if you get such a notice, but never spoke to someone, that suspiciously sounds like being involuntarily shut off for non-payment.
You will need to call DirecTV. Unfortunately hold times are bad because of severe short staffing. Stay at home orders for Covid-19 required the temporary closing of many call centers and putting employees on extended leave. Best you can do is make sure you are calling the DirecTV specific number (not the AT&T one) and when you get the voice system say "cancel". That at least would minimize transfers.

If they are telling you that they are going to charge the NRF then the account should be canceled. You take returnable receivers to a UPS/FedEx store to scan them in and keep the receipt.
