Can't get my service cancelled!

I wasted over 35 minutes yesterday trying to get my service cancelled only to be told that the system is down and it cant be processed.  I was told to call today and waste more time.  I called today and they STILL cannot complete my cancellation.  I cannot believe how difficult and time consuming this is. I am frustrated and disgusted.  I think this is a ploy to keep people from cancelling!  Does anyone have any suggestions?

My suggestion would be to get transferred to a higher level supervisor or the account disconnection department. I don't see any current DIRECTV outages happening, but it is odd that agents have been telling you that the system is down. If it is true and the servers are actually down, I would give it a few more days and try to cancel then. If you get the same info, it may be time at that point to file a BBB complaint. I don't believe this is anything that keeps customers from cancelling, there could always possibly be an outage. I recall one time that the agent on phone with me claimed that the servers were down and that they couldn't activate my receiver. So, it is a thing.

Hi, @wneuberg. We don't want to see you go, so let's help sort things out.

Update:  Spent another 30 minutes on the phone with "cancellation support".   Total time so far (3 calls) is about an hour and a half. Was told it is a technical issue on their side that they know about and are "working on it".  Told that cancellation will happen on 4/10 and I should call back on that day (UGH) to confirm.  Although I only have one month remaining on my contract, they are charging me $40 (2 months) to cancel.  Guess I will have to (Edited per community guidelines) that one up.  Sad.  Just hope that my service is really cancelled as promised.

@wneuberg glad that they put a date in place for the disconnection. If it doesn't work, you may want to file a BBB complaint at that point. I find it upsetting that they are unable to disconnect your account right now. Technical issues should be resolved in an hour at the most.

Disputing with your credit card company doesn't cancel your DirecTV account. If you do that and just ignore anything from DirecTV, then you risk debt piling up, late fees, and hurting your credit even if not your fault to begin with. Can't just ignore a problem and expect it to go away.

They should close it at the end of the current cycle as long as processed correctly. If you get billed for a service month that starts after you cancel, then either dispute via customer support or if needed the BBB as that goes to the corporate level.

Throw their equipment in the front yard and tell them to come get it.

It doesn't go without saying as you told the OP the opposite to instead "dispute" with his card, implying that would close the DirecTV account. The credit card company doesn't "take care" of them to the extent they want. I agree it is DirecTV's responsibility to follow through with the cancellation, but expecting other methods to be the end of it is just setting yourself up for further headache.

DirecTV doesn't send someone to collect the boxes. It is your responsibility to turn into a participating shipper for the free return process.

You toss them in the yard, then that is your own mess to clean up. Plus paying any non-return fee (NRF) once they are billed. Such action just puts you at fault.

The point was it doesn't cancel the DirecTV account. That can still build up charges which have other routes to take for collection.

Not your "sport", so you can stop with the juvenile insults just because I don't share the exact same world view.

I have communicated as an adult. You apparently cannot as you laden your posts with insults.

The wheels of law are slow turning and not guaranteed in your favor. If you want to go that route, then you do so knowing the potential hassles. The point remains, canceling or making a dispute on your card, does not cancel the account.

Regardless of the differences of opinions, please at least keep it civil.
