Change programming package following cancellation?

I cancelled Directv last night, but wasn't aware of the changes to proration, so now I have service for two more weeks that I do not want/need. Can I go online and change my package to the cheapest one possible to be issued a refund for the difference at the end of service?

Semi-related: I was pre-charged for the first NFL Ticket payment installment and specifically made sure that amount will be refunded and was told that will happen.

You cannot lower package online. Plus when account is disconnected the online access becomes unavailable. If your service is still active, call DirecTV to make the change. If service is already shut off then unfortunately it would be too late.

Any installments for the NFL Sunday Ticket should reverse on the following bill as it is before the start of the season. Hopefully the agent manually opted you out of the renewal before setting up the disconnect to be safe, as it sounds like your service month ends around when the season starts.

Yeah they changed the cancellation terms earlier this year about going through end of month. It does simplify the billing, which I understand makes it more efficient from a business standpoint, but I did prefer the old way where you chose your exact end date. But as long as people call ahead of time, and not wait until the last minute (such as already installed with another provider) to discuss the account, it shouldn't be a big issue in the long run. For reference, here is the notice they emailed customers in November 2018.

Please read this if you receive DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse® TV, AT&T Internet, AT&T Phone, and/or AT&T Fixed Wireless service(s). We want to remind you that you’re billed in advance for recurring service(s) and/or programming charges and applicable fees based on the terms of your current service agreement(s) with us. Starting January 14, 2019, subject to applicable laws, we’re updating your agreement(s) to include your recurring service(s)/programming charges and fees won’t be prorated if you cancel the above service(s) on any day other than the last day of your billing cycle. Your service(s) will continue until the end of your billing cycle but you won’t get a refund (prorated credits) for any remaining days left in your billing cycle. For products not listed above, refer to their terms of service for more information.

Questions about this change? Go to att.com/ProrationPolicy for more information and to see the revised section of your service agreement(s).

Credit for the NFL St installment has to be manually applied by the CSR , however,  most of them DON'T apply the credit and just let the next csr deal with it.

Since the account will be cancelled on 9/2 -- prior to the start of the NFL season -- I should automatically be credited back the money they charged me as an advance payment, correct? I asked about this, and I was told that I would be, but I wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any shenanigans just because the account would be closed.

Any installments are credited on the following bill, which in your case would be the statement after cancellation. However you should call and request the agent opt out of the NFL Sunday Ticket as the account cancellation may not do it automatically.
