Here is my transcript from my chat with direct tv: So i called and they want to charge $320.00 to switch over?????????????????

Yes, that agent is correct. Because you have only had DIRECTV for a certain amount of time, they are charging you $320.00 as an early cancellation fee. Everyone that signs up for DIRECTV must agree to a two year contract. Cancellation during that contract will result in a fee in accordance to the amount of time left on the contract. Every month left on the contract costs $20. Therefore, you have only subscribed to DIRECTV for 8 months ($480-$160) and must pay the remaining $320.

DirecTV and DIRECTV STREAM are two separate providers. You are not switching status, but canceling one to go to another.
DirecTV accounts start with a 24 month service agreement. If you cancel before that agreement is over, you are billed an Early Cancellation Fee (ECF) which is valued at $20 for each month remaining. That ECF is in the fine print of all advertisements and in the order confirmation sent to you when you ordered DirecTV service.
Only 8 months in, you had 16 months left. At $20 for each of those remaining months, your ECF would be $320. Each month you stay with DirecTV, that amount lowers by $20. As a note an upgrades of equipment, including adding a TV, come with a 24 month agreement. A Movers order (if without upgrade) is 12 months. This shows in the fine print of the offers as well as the order confirmation sent to you upon placing the order.
This is why I suggest people avoid using chat because of very bad info given like you got. There is no migration between the two. It is canceling one and going to another, or for some households having both. They are separate providers. I would submit a BBB complaint as this is a trend of chat agents claiming it is a free migration when it is not.
