Closing account
I canceled my direct TV yesterday, and was told I have to keep the service for 2 more weeks due to my billing cycle. Apparently AT&T can not cancel a bill mid cycle and credit the account. That seems totally inappropriate and a way for them to get money on something I’m no longer using.
They are able to prorate bills when it’s to their advantage. How does that work???? It seems to me it should work both ways. My last bill was almost $200 for TV, phone and WiFi….a bit excessive.

Directv no longer prorates the final bill. You pay for the full month whether you use it or not. That was a change made over 3 years ago. You

That is totally wrong when they prorate your service if you add something to your account.

You may find it inapprpopriate, but it is within their rights. Many service companies do not prorate their bills, some made that decision before AT&T did others after. Flat billing is the way of many industries now.
This is the notice from 2018 giving all of customers the info that prorating went away:
Please read this if you receive DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse® TV, AT&T Internet, AT&T Phone, and/or AT&T Fixed Wireless service(s). We want to remind you that you’re billed in advance for recurring service(s) and/or programming charges and applicable fees based on the terms of your current service agreement(s) with us. Starting January 14, 2019, subject to applicable laws, we’re updating your agreement(s) to include your recurring service(s)/programming charges and fees won’t be prorated if you cancel the above service(s) on any day other than the last day of your billing cycle. Your service(s) will continue until the end of your billing cycle but you won’t get a refund (prorated credits) for any remaining days left in your billing cycle. For products not listed above, refer to their terms of service for more information.
Questions about this change? Go to att.com/ProrationPolicy for more information and to see the revised section of your service agreement(s).
