Direct TV "past charges" that keep showing up after they have been paid

I HATE Direct TV more than any company I have ever dealt with. AT&T went down when they bought them and then let them use their dirty business practices to their loyal customers.

I cancelled my Dircet TV in 2015. In 2017 they froze my AT&T account until I paid them a supposed old charge of $76.00.

I had paid my account to zero when we ended our service but I could not deal with it because I had to get a new phone so I paid the money. Now, 2020 they come back saying I owe them $56 from when we closed the account. I am so frustrated. I have spent hours on the phone with about 5 different att and direct tv reps and now they say "write a letter disputing the charges"

All I want to do is add a tablet to my account for a disabled friend so he can have internet for school. He cannot afford to pay on his own. But Att won't let me add a tablet due to Direct TV. I have been with Att for over 15 years. This is just corporate abuse. They know people will just say" ok I will pay it" so they don't have to deal with it. I am writing a letter to the FCC as well as the dispute letter.

DirecTV sold their soul to the devil when they let AT&T take over. I've been getting "late payment" charges for 9 months even though "customer service" keeps claiming they fixed it.  The biggest scam came Saturday when an agent who claimed they were "SAM" agent [EDITED], actually stole $17 from me.  We should report this to the government agency which overlooks telecommunication scams. I will post their contact info here.  Give me time.

FCC - good one.  AT&T will not give me an address to send a dispute letter.  Should I use the  Bill Pay address?

is it possible the 56$ is the final bill as they dont prorate the final month, if you cancel even 1 day into the billing cycle you still pay for the entire month and that final billed is mailed to you in paper form

Since the cancellation was in 2015, their final bill would be prorated to the exact last day of service. The proration didn't stop until Jan 2019.

Juniper - you sure sound like one of the crooked AT&T employees. The way "SAM" Agent (edited as per community guidelines ) stole $17 from me, I'm inclined to believe they receive compensation from scamming customers.  I have enough chat conversations to prove their tactics to the FCC.  I agree with the customer who ALSO spent HOURS trying to find a customer rep who even pretended to have any desire to straighten out the mess AT&T created.  I refuse to let the pretend "SAM" get away with scamming a customer.  Who taught AT&T employees how to cheat, lie & steal if it wasn't AT&T itself?  Every agent I spoke to was a scammer.

By the way, AT&T blocked me from using #1KissMy*** as a password. They accepted it at first than blocked me from using it.  You can imagine what my new password is.

Woah settle down there. I was simply correcting another poster. DirecTV used to prorate, as in would adjust service to the exact day you turned off service back when you canceled (2015). The change to no proration where the full bill is charged regardless didn't happen until much later (2019). So the OP would have been credited back unused days, which should have reflected on the final bill.

Just because you are upset about your bill, there is no reason to be toxic to others who are just trying to be helpful. I did nothing even remotely sounding crooked. Just laid out some facts that are in the OP's favor. If you still don't get this, here is the notice they sent to us customers word for word (I kept mine for reference).

Please read this if you receive DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse® TV, AT&T Internet, AT&T Phone, and/or AT&T Fixed Wireless service(s). We want to remind you that you’re billed in advance for recurring service(s) and/or programming charges and applicable fees based on the terms of your current service agreement(s) with us. Starting January 14, 2019, subject to applicable laws, we’re updating your agreement(s) to include your recurring service(s)/programming charges and fees won’t be prorated if you cancel the above service(s) on any day other than the last day of your billing cycle. Your service(s) will continue until the end of your billing cycle but you won’t get a refund (prorated credits) for any remaining days left in your billing cycle. For products not listed above, refer to their terms of service for more information.

Questions about this change? Go to att.com/ProrationPolicy for more information and to see the revised section of your service agreement(s).
