Direct TV SCAM

A question for AT&T and Direct TV, how did they get my AT&T phone number and know I have (soon to be had) Direct TV?

I received a very professional sounding call from AT&T Direct TV offering me half off of my Direct TV monthly bill. I returned the call to 866-787-0107 and again a very professional voice led me to an "agent" with an eastern accent who processed my request. Looking back on it, the professional voice responses almost sounded like it may have been artificial. The agent knew my monthly bill amount and told me that ebay has partnered with Direct TV to create the program. I was dropped and called them back at 800-206-9438.  I was told that to get the deal I had to pay the first 6 months up front for the 2 year deal via an ebay prepaid card (OK I missed it) which I did. Now I'm out $570 and I'm angry with myself.  I just tried the 9438 number again and it's still active with multiple choices.  I didn't fall for the previous Direct TV scam about realigning the satellite but I fell for this one.

They had the nerve to send me a message today from 833-916-0021saying the cards wouldn't process and asking me to call them back at 877-804-3952. I called them and they wanted me to get new cards from a different vendor and call them back with the numbers and they would send me a refund of one of the transactions.

They bought it from the dark web or they where just cold calling knowing that sooner or later they will get a DTV customer.  Of course there is a problem with the cards they want more money.  It is DirecTV not Direct TV.  This is also a well known scam that has been around for years and has been posted here before.  You are now a mark for other scammers.

Most of this information is now available on the "dark web". Crooks gather a little bit here, a little bit there, and then sell it to those who are more savvy on how to use it. Add on top of that a bit of social engineering, they can con their mark into thinking they have all the info resulting in actually tricking them to give up the rest.

And it is DirecTV (only a single T in the brand). Scam sites and such created out there may have that minor misspelling hoping that the consumer will not catch and fall for it.
