Directv call offering hbo

Got a call from a guy [EDITED per Community Guidelines] saying he was from directv and i was getting hbo for 3 months for being a loyal customer and it would activate later that day. I called to verify no record of that offer. I call back that number and it says directv please hold for next agent half hour waiting nothing. What scam is this trying to figure out what they get from this

It involves buying gift cards to pay the discounted price.  I don't remember the details but it's pretty flakey.

That is a SCAM.

Usually they ask to verify information, making you think they already have the info. Sometimes they may know some details they already obtained through other avenues (as con artists do).

They tend to require payment up front by gift card as it is an untraceable source of money. DirecTV will NEVER require you to pay months ahead on your service or to pay with a gift card.

That was the thing what he wanted was for me to agree in taking the 3 months free he didnt ask for anything other than me agreeing and saying yes to accept the 3 month of hbo.

There are outbound sales who may offer 3 months of discounted or free premium. The hope is this tactic results in customer keeping the channels after the promotion.

But too often the 3rd party sales misrepresents what the offer actually is. So still something to be cautious of.

Personally, I wouldn't accept offers where they call you as I don't trust telemarketers in general. To be sure of legitimate offers, I would call official customer support.

I usually never accept from cold calls i usually shut them down but my wife overheard Hbo free for 3 months so i was like ok but then hbo never came on so I called the actual customer service and they said they didnt see that promotion anywhere. So it all just didnt make sense

If it is a legitimate 3rd party outbound offer, then it usually shows up in about 24hrs (going from their system to DirecTV. Historically DirecTV will show record of the promotion, but not in their "Comment" section from their agents but an additional listing of "Notes". Will confirm if something was offered and even record the number of the company it came from, my own experience in the early days before I became more cautious of telemarketers.
