Freedom of Speech
I just heard about an 16-year employee of AT&T that was fired for speaking his mind texting on his personal phone with a relative. That relative mentioned it to AT&T and then tried to take it back. That person was not communicated with, and the employee was fired!
What has happened to freedom of speech in our country? No person or company has the right to regulate anyone else's speech. An employee should feel free to be able to speak their mind freely. This reminds me of Germany in the late 1930's and early 1940's. Just because your company is large, doesn't give you the right to play God with people's lives.
I am seriously thinking of taking my business to another satellite company.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The First Amendment (Freedom of speech) does not apply to companies and employees. If a company has some sort of policy about texting or the young man broke another rule, then they were well within the right to terminate him.
Does he have a complaint concerning wrongful termination? Perhaps but please don't scream "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" in this situation.

Freedom of Speech does not protect people who choose to complain about their employer. The Employee may be restricted in communication while on the clock, not allowed to divulge internal company info, and even off the clock to an extent is representing AT&T/DirecTV.
So it depends on the exact nature of the message if it crossed lines or not. But such stories are embellished from the truth, or completely false as someone just made it up.
In any case, this has nothing to do with Freedom of Speech. I would suggest reading up on what it actually covers, which is not businesses.
