If he has your boxes in use, then your account is still open. They do not transfer to another account, at least not without being returned to DirecTV first to refurbish them. So when you close your account, boxes go back so you don't get a non-return fee (or recycled if they are too old to go back).

However, it is only one account for the household. So if you two are still living together, trying to cancel your account to open one in his name would be a form of account fraud. If you are no longer living together then he must get his own account. Though it depends on his credit if he can qualify for service.

If you are no longer living together, call DirecTV and close your account. Be aware you will need to get the boxes back from him.
