My head is about to explode after trying to cancel DirecTV

Look. I understand that ATT/DirecTV changed their policy at the beginning of the year regarding pro-rating bills; however, that is the stupidest policy I have ever experienced. My bill went up by $158 from one month to the next and I have to pay it apparently. Never again will I use DirecTV and when I found out that AT&T has the same policy, I will never use them for mobile service either. What a crappy thing to do.

That part of the Terms of Service changed at the beginning of last year, not this year. And other companies have done the same thing, with more choosing to do so (got a notice from another provider in the last couple months for similar change).

Of course AT&T has the same policy on this as they own DirecTV. So it was a change across the board.

Here is the notice from 2018 with change in 2019:

Please read this if you receive DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse® TV, AT&T Internet, AT&T Phone, and/or AT&T Fixed Wireless service(s). We want to remind you that you’re billed in advance for recurring service(s) and/or programming charges and applicable fees based on the terms of your current service agreement(s) with us. Starting January 14, 2019, subject to applicable laws, we’re updating your agreement(s) to include your recurring service(s)/programming charges and fees won’t be prorated if you cancel the above service(s) on any day other than the last day of your billing cycle. Your service(s) will continue until the end of your billing cycle but you won’t get a refund (prorated credits) for any remaining days left in your billing cycle. For products not listed above, refer to their terms of service for more information.

Questions about this change? Go to att.com/ProrationPolicy for more information and to see the revised section of your service agreement(s).

Verizon and T-Mobile do the same thing, they don’t prorate the final month either. The wireless industry has been that way for years. ATT’s policy change was to put all their services under one policy.

Juniper - Thank you for the clarification; however, it has done nothing for my head explosion. I'll get over it after I get over the shock.

Sandblaster - Thank you for the clarification; my head still hurts. I'm almost over it. Just give me a grace period while I catch up with the rest of the world :-)

Sorry about the shock of it all. Sometimes clarification is all we can provide to help other customers like ourselves.

However, re-reading your post I notice you weren't saying the bill was now up to $158 (total) but it increased by that much. If that is the case, I would compare the bills side by side, as even discounts ending wouldn't be that much. Check for one-time charges, or a carry over balance.
