Recycling Equipment

After cancelling my service, I received an email from ATT saying that I do not have to return my equipment.  Is this true?  I thought there was a significant penalty for not returning set-top boxes, dvr's, remote controls, etc...  I'd email ATT to ask this question, but I can't find an email from them and don't want to wait on hold for them to answer the phone :-O

Some DirecTV equipment must be returned and some not.

WHAT equipment (model #s) are in question?

There is no support by email as they want help to be live.

There can be a non-return fee (NRF), but boxes are not required back forever. Eventually older models are phased out. What are the models of each box you have? Only the receiver/client boxes, a.k.a. set-top-box (STB), with access cards inside are returned (DVR is a type of STB/Receiver). Everything else, including remotes, you own upon install.
