Service Call requires 12 Month Programming Agreement?
3/15/2021 We had extreme wind event and roof ridge shingles tore off and hit the dish. A service call was initiated and the tech replaced the dish reflector (not LNB). We paid the $99. AT&T still had my old address from 2½ years ago, before our move here. After 45 minutes of phone support my service address was updated.
I then received an email stating- "You have accepted a 12 MONTH PROGRAMMING AGREEMENT. If you decide to cancel your service early or do not maintain 12 consecutive months of base level programming (priced at $29.99/mo. or above) or qualifying international services bundle, you will be charged an Early Termination Fee (ETF) of $20.00 per month for each month remaining on your 12-month contract (up to $240.00)."
We have had DirecTV for over 15 years. I do not want to be under a " PROGRAMMING AGREEMENT".
Is this normal?
thanks, T

Thats the reason for the 12 month agreement, not the service call and yes, it’s normal. Changing your address is a move order, something you were supposed to do when you moved. Unless you are planning to cancel in the next 12 months, it’s not a big deal.

It was their mistake in not updating the service address in the computers. And, hopefully, I will be cancelling the DirecTV when Starlink service reaches my address.

Starlink is internet service not tv. Unless you talking about going to streaming services

Move orders come with a 12 month agreement so it would have started when you moved or now.

A service call doesn't come with a 12 month agreement.
What is happening is the only way to update the service address is with a Movers order. That is what comes with a 12 month agreement. DirecTV is not built to move boxes between locations on a regular basis, but for a set residence.
Too many people would have boxes at multiple locations active at the same time. And the physical service address regulates locals received, what sports teams are in-market, and the taxes required to be paid. So upon AT&T acquiring DirecTV a few years ago, they no longer allowed service address to be changed simply upon request to stop people violating the rules (even if they were only doing so by accident/misunderstanding).

The move was 2½ years ago. And I had a 12 month Programming Agreement at that time. They updated the service address last month during the service call and I was given another 12 month agreement.
Yes, Starlink is internet and I will switch to streaming. My 5Mbps AT&T DSL with 150 gig cap is dismal.
I will spend the hour to 2 hours on the phone Monday to get it worked out and 12 month agreement cancelled.
Thanks for the answers.

As long as that move 2 years ago was through a proper movers order with a 12 month agreement, then a new one shouldn't have occurred. However if you moved, but didn't place a movers order (so just handling it on your own), the address updating recently would be the actual movers order with the correct service agreement.
If the service agreement is determined by DirecTV to be in error, then upon canceling the account they submit a waiver on the ECF for that reason. Unfortunately there is no way to remove a service agreement once placed on the account, only submitting the ECF waiver as needed is the option.

Juniper, Yes it was a move initiated by calling DirecTv and doing everything by them and receiving all new DVR and wireless units installed at new address across town.
I'll just have to spend time in the rabbit hole of customer service to find the person to issue the waiver.
Thanks.

Adding new receivers would have extended the movers contract to 2 years not one.

Waiver can only be submitted upon cancelling, as that is when the ECF would charge. They cannot do so before then.
Getting a new DVR and wireless units would have been an upgrade, which would have changed it to a 24 month agreement instead. Though at 2 and half years ago then that would have finished as well, provided service was active the entire time (if account was suspended at any point, that time doesn't count).
But a movers order would have updated the service address, so it updating during the recent service call doesn't make sense as should have been the correct one to begin with, otherwise they wouldn't have known where to go to install all your new boxes the last time.
