Someone calling in saying they are me?
Has anyone had this happen? I've had it happen twice in the past few weeks. Directv calls me to verify my account, and both times they say someone is calling in saying they are me, but they "obviously" aren't me (I assume because of their accent).
Both times they have told me there's really nothing I can do. But apparently these people have my name, address, and account number.
one I just spoke to said he was trying to cancel my account. So what is the scam exactly?

DirecTV does not call to verify your account. That is the scam itself. They are trying to get you to "verify" your info so they have that for identity theft.
Do not give out info to someone that calls you, even if the Caller ID looks ok as that is too easily spoofed. Only call the official DirecTV number to discuss your account. I would highly suggest putting a password on the account or changing it if you have one, depending on what info you gave the caller.

As noted, Directv does not call to verify your account. If you did verify your account information with whoever called you, you should be on the lookout for unexpected charges on your account.

Plus you are now marked so they sell your info to other scammers.
