Speaking to a representative who knows the answer?
I have called several times in regards to being charged for whole home dvr service. I returned my 2nd box and only have 1 tv almost 2 years ago. No access or way to use the whole home service but still I get charged 3.00 a month for it. I have tried disputing the charges and get know where. Everytime I get a different representative who tells me they will connect me to someone who can help. What a joke. No one ever helps. I refuse to make a payment and filed a grievance with the better business bureau. Does anyone have any answers?

If you have a Genie then it is required to have Whole Home even if you are not using it.

Yes you are correct. But if you previously only had a set number of boxes in your home and returned them the the 3.00 whole home is not applied to your account according to what I was told and they took it off my then starting charging for it again. Paying for services you do not use is big Corporations ripping people off.

The Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54) is DirecTV's Advanced Whole Home HDDVR. So even in a single TV setup, the Whole Home DVR is required. Not only to support the possibility of Clients, but the Genie is 5 tuners so is just over 2 HDDVRs in capability.
If reducing to a single TV left you with a regular HDDVR, then Whole Home DVR service would be removable.
HDDVR (last model made was HR24) requires HD and DVR service.
Advanced Whole Home HDDVR (Genie) requires HD, DVR, and Whole Home DVR service.
TiVO HDDVR (THR22) requires HD, DVR, and TiVO service.
