What am I missing about the price increase?
Regarding the increased prices for DirecTV accounts, I seem to be missing something. When trying to justify the increase, the reason used is the programming cost increase. This is the direct quote from the overview billing page:
^Because our programming costs went up, we have to raise our monthly price for your TV package. You'll see your new price starting with your February 2021 bill.
DIRECTV CHOICE is increasing in the base price before discounts.
Annual rate increase total
$7.00*
*The taxes and fees for your DIRECTV service will increase based on the new base price of your service.
Heads up:
If you have a DIRECTV® or U-verse TV promotion, you'll keep that discount amount until it expires – as long as you don't change your base package.^
So, if the annual rate increase total is $7, again, ANNUALLY, why is my monthly bill increasing by $8, again, MONTHLY?
I have to believe I am missing something here. Could someone please explain? I have read and reread this so many times, my head is spinning. I can't make the math work in my head.

Right, the annual base price increase is for the next 12 months then they have to decide how much they will have to increase it for the next 12 months.

Because of increasing costs from the networks, then annually DirecTV adjusts costs going forward. So once a year the new rates go into affect. The annual adjustment doesn't mean you only pay an increase for a single month. It is simply the base rates are adjusted once a year and stay that way until the next adjustment.

The MONTHLY cost increased by $7. There is an ANNUAL rate increase effecting your MONTHLY costs.
TV PRICE CHANGES FOR 2021
Compare your current bill with a previous bill to see where the extra $1 increase is from.

"Cut The Cord" (if possible)
The best thing DirecTV did for me after 22+ years as a loyal, recruiting customer, was to turn my signal off and NOT work with me.
(My 1st receiver and dish were made by General Electric)
I had severe financial problems due to Covid and they turned my signal off (obviously)
I then found almost EVERYTHING I was watching on DirecTV for $165 a month, for (1) TV mind you, for FREE (NOT IPTV)
For the other channels/programs I couldn't find, I have not paid more than $50 a month now with DVR.
(thats for 3 months then it will be $70 a month unless my CC keeps their promo going which they have now for over 3 months straight)
Honestly, had DirecTV worked with me, I would still stupidly be paying up to $160 a month because I probably would not have bothered looking elsewhere for viewing options. My parents who live 6 blocks from me, with (5) TVs and the exact same DirecTV tier, pay EXACTLY $165 a month.
I honestly would keep the service but DirecTV would have to match the $70 max a month I am or will be paying, with no annual contract, but, I hear they have or are once again raising their prices. (it appears they intentionally intend to continue hemorrhaging customers)
Then again its only 1 receiver I must return.

Not paying your bill of course results in your service shutting off. How long you've been a customer doesn't change the fact you still have a bill to pay. TV is entertainment so doesn't get additional protections that a necessary utility might.
Once you're past due, but before shut off, you call to discuss perhaps setting up a payment arrangement. Gives you some additional time to pay before service is interrupted, but is not indefinite.
Networks charge TV providers a lot to be carried. That cost has gone up over the years resulting the prices we pay today. Unlike some other providers, DirecTV allows you to change your package at any time, plus it has no affect on your service agreement. I highly suggest that everybody review the channels they watch, not just those with financial hardship, to see if they are in the package that best fits them or not.
Your parents being 6 blocks or 6 states away makes little difference. Locals and RSNs available, RSN fee, and taxes are the only difference if you have the exact same services. I would suggest they review their service in case they are getting a discount and so can be prepared for the full cost when the promotion ends. It would take a full review of line items on their bills and yours to verify what the actual differences are, since they would not have the exact same setup you do.
Though boxes are leased, there comes a point where the box is no longer returnable. What model is yours?
