You have to call DirecTV to cancel. Returning equipment doesn't cancel the account for you.

Even if you call to cancel and return equipment on the 1st day of your cycle, you still pay for the entire service month. Like many companies they do not prorate your final bill.

After you cancel, you still get your final bill statement. Ideally this shows that your prior payment was received and left your account at a $0 balance (paid in full). However it might show one-time charges such as an early cancellation fee (ECF) if you were still under a service agreement, PPVs if any were found on an access card upon return, or non-return fee (NRF) if they didn't receive all boxes back.

So those are possibilities for why you are seeing a bill. To find out you actually have to pick up the phone and call DirecTV. This is a public forum of other customers so we cannot see your bill to find out exactly what is going on.
