2 dvrs R22's
I have 2 DTV DVRs (one new, one I've been using for several years). I'm pretty sure the one I've been using is on it's way out (each time it runs a self check I have less and less free space). So, what I'd like to do is set up the new dvr, attach to the satellite as well as a HDMI to the tv and start recording show (and watching a few of the daytime ones). What I'd also like to do is hook up the old dvr just to the tv with an HDMI cable and watch the shows I have recorded before it dies. 1. would that work? 2. what do I need to tell DTV as far as activating the new DVR? 3. if the old DVR is deactivated, will it still work for playback? and 4. what would be the trick to control 1 dvr at a time with the remote, can I just cover the front with my hand so the one I don't want reacting doesn't get the signal?

The only time I have EVER seen WHDVR use home WiFi is with two receivers connected to separate satellite dishes in the same home. Both are connected to the same WiFi network via either an access point, DIRECTV CCK, or the receiver's built-in wireless. Once both say "CONNECTED," they will recognize each other on the same network and sharing is possible through there.
I know some on this forum will disagree with me, but try it for yourself. Surprising that it works, because it does. Take a Genie HD DVR and another HD or HD DVR receiver. Connect both to the same WiFi network but a DIFFERENT satellite dish. Once turned on and set properly, WHDVR sharing will work.

then why am I getting this message that has zero to do with coax "Genie has been disconnected from your home network. This program can no longer be viewed." I also lose the genie shows when I pull up my list of recorded shows when the wifi is down.

A show from On Demand, or using the restart from beginning feature (which downloads it from On Demand), are the options that use your home internet.
Internet is not required for the Genie, Whole Home DVR, or having DirecTV. The DirecTV service is by satellite down through the coax to your boxes.
Yes two boxes on separate satellite setups connected to internet can cause some unintended interactions, and may bridge some Whole Home (like if you have a detached garage), but again is not required nor how Whole Home DVR was built.

@Juniper except that I'm doing neither of those things when I get that message. I am watching a program that has been recorded on the genie, through my tv in another room that's attached to the r22. If it's just using coax, why isn't cr@ppy playback consistent? It should either be fine all the time or jumpy all the time. You kinda alluded to it in another comment (but never elaborated) that maybe because the genie and the r22 are both connected to the internet that maybe the genie is getting confused and is trying to use the wifi? Wifi may not be necessary for whole home, but it is how the r22 and the genie are communicating.

If your Genie and R22 are both on the same receiving dish and coax (so the same physical setup), but each have a separate connection to your internet, that is a problem. The Genie serves as the connection for all boxes.
So if the R22 is connected, whether by Ethernet or a wireless CCK, you will need to disconnect that. Once those extra connections are unplugged from the R22 then go into Menu > Settings > Settings & Help > Internet > Advanced and reset the network defaults. You may need to red button reset the R22 at the end, but only do so if you continue with issues after the prior steps.
Only the Genie should connect to internet and then share that with all boxes. Otherwise you cause conflicts.
Internet is not needed for DirecTV. So it is built to share info via the coax. Problem is they are trying to communicate by coax and your router. DirecTV equipment was not built to connect multiple boxes and then filter specific data.

@Juniper Thanks. Can I reset the internet setup on the r22 without physically disconnecting the CCK or will it just reconnect on it's own?

The CCK must be physically disconnected. Otherwise the box tries to reconnect, and even if not successful the additional connection can still cause conflicts.
That should explain why you keep getting the error message. The R22's CCK and the one built into the Genie are fighting each other for which one is the connection.

One other note, you might want to reset your Gateway after cleaning up the DirecTV setup. You don't have to factory reset, pulling power for a minute or two should be plenty. I personally would disconnect both R22 and Genie from internet as above, reset/powercycle the Gateway, then when your internet is back up to reconnect the Genie.
Just a suggestion to cover all bases to ensure nothing cached/saved on either side from the conflicting setup.

thanks to internet going out multiple times per day, I reboot the modem/router frequently so that's not an issue. Right now, the genie is obviously using the wifi to share the list of recorded shows and show programming (based on the message that the genie has disconnected from the internet, so programing is no longer available), so you're positive that if I reset everything and not reconnect the r22 to the internet that I'll still have access to the genie programing?

No it is not, it can't use WiFi for anything but connecting to your internet.

@shannon02 Then please explain why the play list disappears when the internet is down and I get the message that "Genie has been disconnected from your home network. This program can no longer be viewed." and the recorded program on the genie that I'm playing in another room stops playing. You keep saying "coax" but coax does not explain this message.

@mpsmom I'm sure that if you physically disconnect the R22 from the internet by disconnecting the CCK, the issue will be fixed when you unplug the power for a minute after doing so.

For the few of you who insist that I am def NOT using the wifi to view shows in one room that were recorded on the genie in another room and who apparently think dtv doesn't know what they're talking about (although that is believable sometimes), I unplugged the coax from the wall. The R22 is disconnected from coax, yet I am playing a show from the genie and can pull up the genie playlist from my r22. Took a video, but apparently you can't upload a video, just link to one. I will disconnect the cck, reset the modem and see if I can get it to use coax. Can I just unplug the CCK (the easiest thing for me to do) to test if it's going to work or not or do I need to physically remove the ethernet cable from the r22?

The R22 doesn't even have WiFi built in as there was no WiFi when it was made. You are getting the programs off the internet connection that is not supposed to be connected to it. You will need a connected home adapter to remove the internet from the coax to feed the R22 Ethernet port.

Just physically remove the R22's ethernet cable.
You're making this harder than it needs to be.
