Not sure what you mean.  Your HR54 can record 4K broadcasts on the few 4K channels. But you need a compatible Genie Client box to actually view them on a 4K TV. What equipment do you have?

Hi, @shohead. You can keep your DVR while watching 4K shows or content, and here's what you need to watch shows and movies in 4K Ultra HD:

1. A Genie HD DVR (Model HR54 or above) connected to the internet

2. A 4K-compatible TV (like A DIRECTV 4K Ready TV) connected to a 4K Genie Mini receiver

3. DIRECTV Select or Mas Latino package and above

AFAIK DirecTv ready TVs are no long being made and they didn't need a mini connected to them.

You need a C61K or a C71WK mini client connected to the 4K TV to watch the 4K channels in 4K.

@shokhead

If this is your only TV then having a Gemini (C71KW) co-located may be the solution so your account isn't billed as if you have two TVs.

If you have other TVs, what are the models of those boxes? This will narrow down options and if you might sacrifice something in order to get 4K.

Just do NOT upgrade to the Genie-2 (HS17) as it would require replacing your HR54 since you can't have multiple main Genies. Plus the Genie-2 only accepts Clients so would lose any other HDDVRs you might have.

It doesn't matter that there is only 1 TV that is 4K or that you are concerned about. What matters is how many TVs/boxes you have on the account. This is because a 4K setup has a special setup that may require rearranging things.

Simply put the HR54 cannot output 4K. This requires a 4K Client on the 4K TV itself. Usually means moving the HR54 to one of your other TVs and replacing one of those boxes to go on the 4K TV itself. But if the HR54 is the only TV you have then there is a newer option that might work, but is not as simple as if you have multiple TVs.

Sorry but 4K setups are still in the early days so is not quite as simple as we would like.

You can keep your HR54 as it supports a 4K setup. But to give you the answer you need, then you need to provide the model numbers of all your boxes.

There are a few ways to do this with pros/cons to each. To figure out what will be your best option, we need to know your full setup.

I have ONE newer Samsung 60" 4k tv. Other TV isn't used and has no cable or Sat and doesn't need it.

My Samsung has ONE box, the HR24.

So to be clear you have a total of two boxes, your Genie (HR54) and a regular HDDVR (HR24)?

You said one TV has an HR24 HD DVR. And you have an HR54 Genie DVR. If you want to view 4K channels you will need to get a C61K or C71KW to view those channels on its connected TV.

First of all you absolutely have a Genie as that is the HR54. That is the 3rd generation of them. HR34, HR44, and HR54 (the one you have) are all "Genie".

2nd relax please. You clearly don't understand fully what equipment you have and how this all works. We are trying to help,

If you are not using the HR24, then have DirecTV deactivate it so you are not paying for a TV you are not using. Return the box (or recycle it if they don't want it back) since it is of no use to you.

Having your Genie (HR54) being the only box you will have, then you would need to see about co-locating the Gemini (C71KW). This puts the small box between the HR54 and your TV. This is a new option which allows you to passthrough the HR54's connection to the TV so you are not charged for an additional TV. The old way was to have both HR54 and 4K Mini Genie Client (C61K) on the same TV, but counting as two connections and you had to switch inputs to use one or the other.

If you had planned to keep other boxes, then a bit of a different setup would be considered.
