Ad plays when recording paused
We pay a LOT of money for our dtv/att service to be shown ads every time we pause a recording??? There has to be a way to turn this off. I won’t continue to pay for a service that turns my tv into a billboard every time I stop watching for a second. This is the kind of crap I knew would happen when att bought dtv

The pause screen adds are downloaded form the internet. So go into Menu > Settings > Internet > Advanced and reset the network defaults. Red button rest the box (and unplug from internet router if wired connection). This will revert it back to logo screen saver while paused. Existing recordings might still have the special screen saver injected, so may only fix it going forward.
Personally I don't find it an issue as I tend only to pause when I'm not going to watching the TV anyway. As long as it remains still pictures and doesn't change to video or have audio.

If your son watches TV then he sees commercials. There is no option to block any of them regardless if pause screen or on the channel itself.
You can disconnect from internet to revert the screen saver back to the company logo. But all channel commercials will still be there.
This has nothing to do with how much you are appreciated. As a business they are using a viable advertising spot. I suggest when pausing to go do something else instead of sitting there watching it.

I suggested what reasonably can be done such as doing something else while paused (assumedly you paused for a reason) or disconnecting from internet to get the logo screen saver instead. This is a public forum of others to chime in and try to help, so posting here is asking for suggestions even if not directly as that is a primary reason for coming here.
As mentioned their advertising has nothing to do with you being appreciated or not. Them using a valid marketing space should not influence your self-worth.
So you absolutely have a way to eliminate the advertisement screen saver and keep your NFL Sunday Ticket. But if switching providers and losing NFL Sunday Ticket, instead of disconnecting your setup from internet, is more valuable to you then so be it. You have your options.

This is another example of a company finding a way to inject more advertising into your life as an opportunity to attempt to squeeze more revenue from you. You are clearly NOT the customer. You are the PRODUCT. If you were the customer, then you'd be respected. The fact that DirecTv doesn't respect you is clear evidence that you are NOT the customer; advertisers are. You are just eye cattle.
This is just one of the reasons (although the main one) why I canceled my DirecTv service and will not be resuming.
People like Juniper saying
"Them using a valid marketing space should not influence your self-worth."
just chaps my hide. It is a surly response to a legitimate concern.
Maybe if I were getting DirecTv for free, then that would be a "valid marketing space" but since I am a paying customer (and paying quite a lot I might add) turning my expensive television - that I paid for - into a 75" billboard in my living room, with NO REAL OPTION for turning it off is just (Edited per community guidelines) offensive!!

The pause ads use up my allowed monthly internet data, which costs me. When it sends me over my monthly allotment my satellite internet throttles and I’d have to pay more to prevent that. I did not give permission for DirecTV to use my wifi for the pause commercials when I have not chosen it. They have literally chosen to take money from me for commercials without my consent with no way to opt out. Seems like grounds for a (Edited per community guidelines) (Edited per community guidelines).

You don't need to have your DirecTV equipment connected to the internet, especially if you have satellite internet.

Litzdog911, You need to be connected to the internet to watch on demand, and to download shows you missed. I want the internet connected, and I want to use it at my discretion. I do not want DirecTV deciding to use my internet, for the sole purpose of showing me commercials while my programs are paused. I am not going to constantly connect and disconnect from my wifi just to keep DirecTV from stealing my monthly allotted data and running up my internet bill. They have no business secretly using a service I pay for to show ads on my device. They snuck this “feature” in through a back-door without providing the users a way to opt out. Shady and underhanded business practice. Not a very classy action.

Then you need a higher internet cap as it is highly unlikely DTV will change it. It is more likely then not dish will jump on the bandwagon if they haven't already.

Even before the pause screen advertisements were introduced, it was suggested to not be connected to satellite internet or any other internet that is metered/data capped. The risk of eating through your data allowance was to great to begin with.
Yes On Demand needs internet as that is what it is through. However, On Demand itself is not needed. DirecTV is first and foremost TV by satellite.
And remember, many networks now disable FF/REW when watching On Demand content. They treat it just like their own website, not giving you the option to avoid commercials. This part DirecTV doesn't have control over because of the loophole of the content coming from internet, not through the satellite feed.
I am not a fan of more advertisements, but I would rather that than the bill increasing that much more to make up for it. Because of the data allowance I would disconnect your setup from the internet to begin with, regardless of the pause screen advertisements. As for networks disabling the FF/REW, that I wish the loophole would be closed.

Juniper, what Menu are you referaring to to reset the pause screen ads? I am having this trouble with my AT&T set top box or my AT&T remote. The screen says "press any button to dismiss this screen.

Might have changed with the new GUI, but this is essentially it.
Menu > Settings & Help > Settings > Internet > Advanced and you reset network defaults.
By not being connected to internet, the traditional logo screen saver will eventually return. However anything recorded while connected to internet, will most likely still have the pause screen ads or injected commercials.
Remember doing this means you have no access to On Demand, Play from Beginning, or ordering PPVs by the remote as those all go through internet.

I believe that I have found the problem with my AT&T tv controller. I went to Home>Settings>System>Display and turned off the screen saver which is on by default. Now when I pause the TV, it reamains paused.
It seems that the screen saver is actually a way of putting on advertising but it also interferes with the pause.

Sorry but you are in the wrong forum. This is the section for DirecTV (also owned by AT&T). Follow the links at the top if you want to be in the AT&T TV section.
DirecTV and AT&T TV are different providers owned by AT&T.
DirecTV has no option to turn off the screen saver.

What makes me angry about the ad's is that it changes my audio decoder when it does this. I'll pause a program playing in dolby digital 5+1), and after the screen saver comes on, it changes it to PCM (2+1). I have to change channel, then come back and it is back to normal again. This didn't happen before the ad's started on the screen saver.
Guess I'll unplug the internet from the receiver.
