Alleged FREE equipment tale

For about 6 months I received notices u had to get new equipment or I would not be able to get the channels.
It emphasized you wd be billed but then you could “call” and get the equipment fee removed.
I spoke to 3 different people. The second one assured me he had fixed it and my bill would be “”$79.99, no more, no less”. He repeated this phrase 3 times.
They took $101 out of my bank account.
The 3rd call i made lasted over an hour. Red, a man with a language barrier, kept talking in circles and was very scripted. He just kept saying it was the “features” I was getting. I told him i did not want any additional “features”. I asked for Supervisor.  He kept me holding for over an hour as he kept repeating please hold for a supervisor.    Just gameplaying.
He never got a supervisor.
Finally I said: “are you saying my monthly rate went up because you forced me to take this equipment?”
I had him read off my present rate for tv and my present rate for wifi; compared to May.
I said: “well, Red, when the next person calls in asking why their bill is higher after they got the forced equipment, just please tell them the rates were raised because of the new equipment. You can then save over an hour of wasting the poir person’s time”
I believe they are trained not to say that.
Do not get involved with Directv

The free MPEG2 SD swap does include free dish and receivers with no new contract but most CSRs are putting it in as an upgrade with a new contract if that is what your case is.

DirecTV is shutting down their MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. So anyone with legacy SD-only boxes does need to get updated equipment.

It emphasized you wd be billed but then you could “call” and get the equipment fee removed.

That is absolutely not how it works. Either that notice was from a 3rd party or you misunderstood the process. You call DirecTV and request a MPEG swap. Required equipment is free, no new service agreement, and if you don't already have HD service than that new line item is credited (unknown for how long). Any upfront changes means it is not a MPEG swap.

The second one assured me he had fixed it and my bill would be “”$79.99, no more, no less”. He repeated this phrase 3 times.

That was definitely wrong. Anything like $79.99, $129.99, etc. would be programming pacakge cost only (such as when you look at intro pricing for a new customer), but not the entire bill. You still have your TV fees, taxes, receiver services (such as DVR if you have it), and any optional services you have.

my present rate for wifi

There is no rate for WiFi. I can connect my computer to my printer with WiFi without paying a cent. I believe you mean your rate for internet. WiFi is just a wireless connection between devices, regardless of if you have internet or not.

I said: “well, Red, when the next person calls in asking why their bill is higher after they got the forced equipment, just please tell them the rates were raised because of the new equipment. You can then save over an hour of wasting the poir person’s time”
I believe they are trained not to say that.

DirecTV agents are not trained to say that as that is not how it works in the first place. There is the MPEG swap and then there is an optional upgrade. Sounds like you got the latter. You got very bad information from an agent who needs to be retrained (or let go if on purpose to scam an upgrade on their stats), and from an email that was from a 3rd party or a legitimate DirecTV one you misunderstood.

If an offer says you pay up front and then when all is done to call and request a refund or charges credited, be very cautious. That is not exclusive to DirecTV.
