Genie/Mini Genie Client model HR44/C41 and up are returnable. So both of yours are returnable.

Take a FedEx or UPS Store that participates in the free return program. Have account number handy. And make sure to get receipt showing they took possession.

I just received an email telling me to recycle both of these.

@RetroGiant

You received an email to recycle the exact models of HR44 and C41? That must of recently updated, though at least makes sense for the Client as a few models have been released since.

Though I am concerned about the HR44. That would mean only the HR54 (and revised model HR54R1) and HS17, as well as the H25, the remaining boxes returnable as far as the main box goes. I haven't felt there have been enough boxes to go around, especially with the MPEG-2 shutdown requiring people to replace boxes, plus the unreliability of the Genie-2 to warrant that change (in my opinion).

If you are out and about I would still try returning to a participating FedEx or UPS store. Otherwise just hold onto a bit longer to see if you get charged a non-return fee (NRF), within the next 2 months. Best to play it safe.

Yea, I planned on keeping them for a while just in case. What’s strange is on the phone after cancelling she went through the whole “we’ll, send you a box/return label etc.” then the next day I get this email. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Less hassle for me though so I’ll take it.

Though retention agents are normally very experienced and helpful, one common failing is they don't check your models against the returnable list and just give general info. I assume this is to save time so they can get to their next call and try to make up for the lost account.

New process is taking boxes to a FedEx or UPS Store that participates in the free return program. DirecTV uses the old process of sending you the prepaid return kit (to your physical service address by FedEx, back to them by USPS) if you are over 10 miles away from one of those shippers.

In the end if you do recycle the boxes, make sure to remove the access card from the HR44. In some cases you might get a envelope to send it back (which would confirm box is not returnable) within 30 days. If no envelope, and box is non-returnable, then the card is disposed of securely like you would a credit card.
