Bait & Switch
I've been a Directv customer for 14 years (since 1997), and I can honestly say this is the first time I feel genuinely scammed.
I've been installing my own equipment for the last 10 years, and since I prefer the newest stuff. I went to this page:
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/content/technology/hd_dvr_receiver
...and ordered what I thought was a HR24 to upgrade from the HR21 (which is, IMO, a slow, lag ridden piece of junk). Of course, only after receiving a refurbished HR21 - THE DVR I ALREADY HAVE - did I see the incredibly tiny print stating "Your actual HD DVR may vary".
Does Directv actual think they are being even remotely honest selling HD DVR's from the page above - one which pictures the HR24, AND lists all IT'S specifications, while they are actually shoveling HR21's out the door?
After spending just less than $160, I am now the lucky recipient of the very same equipment I already own. Now, even getting an actual human on the phone seems impossible, as it appears the automated phone tree system they've installed is actually designed to frustrate and drive away their own customers.
What an unbelievable waste of time.
Thank you for such loyalty to a long-term customer DTV....you've finally convinced me to switch to cable.

Directv will never see your comments. We are all users here so whether you abandon Directv or not is of no matter to us. I can understand your disappointment. This often happens when you predetermine what should occur and reality doesn't match your expectations. Have you contacted Directv and asked that they allow you to return the replacement HR21? I'm assuming you never activated it, yes? If they will agree, you can procure a HR24 from the link.

As an aside, I ordered a HD DVR for my step son's 12th birthday to replace an old SD Tivo. The one that arrived was a refurbished HR21 and he thought it was beautiful. That was about 14 months ago, the HR21 works just fine and he is happy as can be.

As you discovered, if you order a DVR from DirecTV there is no guarantee what model you will receive. It has always been that way. You will find many posts discussing this on all the satellite forums. As dcd says, if you want a specific model you have to order it from solid signal or one of the other online retailers.
