Can I watch recorded TV on an old HR23-700 that is not hooked up to a satellite?

I have and old HR23-700 that we don’t use anymore. I’m curious if I can see what recordings are on it without it being connected to a satellite. I tried plugging it in and running a HDMI cable to a monitor and I get diagnostic code 14-939. Any way to watch the recordings?

Unfortunately, no.

When a box powers back up it checks to verify that it is still authorized on the service. Since it cannot receive the satellite signal then it cannot receive the authorizations.

Now if satellite signal goes out (weather, something happened to the dish, etc.), then a box currently connected might retain authorizations for a while (as long as you don't remove power resulting a full reboot) to watch recordings or even On Demand (if internet still works). But at some point the box automatically checks the incoming satellite feed for authorizations, which with no signal would lock it out.

You say error code 14-939. What does that say? Most likely a hard drive failure so there would be no way to even get in without a new hard drive. Back to authorizations, I wouldn’t exactly say recordings are GUARANTEED to be unwatchable after a miss of satellite signal. Mileage has varied for years across receivers, especially the HR23. Some say the recordings  will be watchable forever while others have reported the recordings going out in the span of a week, month, or couple months. I personally have an HR24 with recordings that have been watchable for well over 2 years. It has been turned on and off several times when being moved around the house. So mileage may vary, especially depending on receiver model and the disconnection method, whether it be the red reset button or an actual plug pull before the box is deactivated. This way, the receiver will miss the deactivate signal and recordings will be preserved for a N/A amount of time.

If has been disconnected from power, then when it boots up if it is not connected to the satellite (as the OP says) then recordings are inaccessible.

The box must be connected to satellite, and active on the account, to recover whatever recordings are still on it. If the box is deactivated on the account, then they are gone as DirecTV doesn't reactivate boxes anymore since they are pushing forward with their newer setups.

@Juniper right I was just pointing out that old receiver models like the HR23 may not require a signal to watch recordings after a reset without a satellite signal. I have been able to test this throughout the years with several receivers, so I am aware it is a thing. If the box was deactivated by DIRECTV while it was unplugged from a dish, it will not receive the deauthorize signal and the recordings will be preserved for an N/A amount of time.

Interesting. That is not what I've experienced with our boxes. That includes HR23 and R22.

That further showcases that the rechecking for authorizations is inconsistent across the boxes, even the same model. Perhaps adjusted by the different software versions over the years.

But with error code 14, well that prevents the attempt since hard drive is now toast.

For reference if the OP or anyone else needs it. Wish DirecTV currently had an easier searchable list but at least solidsignal has a reasonable one.
