DirecTV Gemini feedback?
What’s the general feedback on the new Gemini unit? I’ve been told I'm eligible for it, but I’m hesitant about being an early adopter. Another concern is that it would tie me into a 1-year contract, which I don’t have with my current account. What do you all think?

Right now, I am not a fan for the NEW, "All-In-One Gemini Receiver," at the current time. From reading, there seems to be some bugs that need to be solved by DTV software folks.
Perhaps the bugs have been resolved and some may chime in to support the Gemini Receiver. Or, they are not experiencing any issues. I am on the waiting list, long story short.

If you have DirecTV (satellite) than the Gemini will come with a 24 month service agreement as it is an upgrade of equipment, just like any other receiver/client box.
You must have a main Genie/Genie-2 as your main box, just like with any other client.

Thanks @Juniper the agent said 1-year. So that's interesting and requires clarification before I accept and install.
The other question - is it worth it? It's just another box I suspect.

The Gemini is like a Mini Genie. Difference is that it supports streaming apps instead of using a separate Roku, Firestick, etc. It is also 4K capable if you have the setup that supports a 4K Mini Genie in the first place.
Not a huge improvement, but adds convenience for some.
Yes it is a 24 month service agreement. Only an SD non-DVR had the 12 month agreement, and that is a long discontinued option.

Honestly, I have no clue because it's been a few years since I received new equipment (and I'm currently a free-agent). Looks similar to DIRECTV HR24 HD Receiver but at least 3 to 4 years old.
Along with 4 satellite receivers scattered about the house. Sorry I wish I had better info to share.

If you're happy with your current equipment then there's no need to "upgrade". It sounds like you don't currently have a Genie box (HS17 or HR54), so your "upgrade" would require that, too.

If you have the Genie (HR44) mixed with regular HDDVRs (last model HR24), than that is for most the best setup. It is even more capable than the Genie-2 (HS17) as that model doesn't allow other receiver/HDDVRs which hard caps what it can do.
Now if your boxes are something other than HR models, than perhaps there might be something to consider.
Being 3-4 years old doesn't mean anything as I believe even HR24s stopped being made before that. DirecTV was pushed into an all-in-one setup. I hope that the new owners (since AT&T finally sold off their remaining shares) will return to a more consumer friendly option. We shall see.
