Dishpointer Pro AR app for Iphone 4
Trying to do a sight survey for a 3LNB install with some tree issues. Has anyone used this app and exactly how do you use it? I can't find instructions anywhere. I downloaded the app and moved to a place where, if I hold it up, I can see the 99-103 sats without obstruction. Does the Iphone have to be held at any certain angle to mimic the correct antenna az, tilt, or skew? Thanks.

It's a very simple app to use. I've used it several times. It's just like looking through a window where the satellite locations are labeled. The phone's built-in GPS, level and compass make it pretty much immune to how you orient the phone. So if you can clearly see the 99, 101 and 103ºW satellites without tree obstructions, then you're at a good dish location.

The "i" stuff tends to do that, make it look so easy. Imagine if Directv had teamed up with Apple instead of Tivo?

After opening the Dishpointer app on the Iphone, the compass should be calibrated. From a Youtube contributor, paraphrased." Hold the iphone up like you are steering a car, hold it for 5 seconds then turn it right 90 degrees, hold 5 sec, then continue to 180, 270, then back to vertical, holding it 5 seconds each stop. Then put it on its tummy for 5 sec, then back for 5 sec," then lift it up and look through the camera for the location of the sats. DTV wants an additional 10 degrees left and right of the sats, which for my 3LNB install, will be 99-103 sats.

Apparently, after the compass is calibrated, and you have looked up your azimuth and elevation figures for your location on dishpointer.com, you move to the location you want the antenna,( for me, up an aluminum ladder to a porch roof), and point the iphone at the azimuth, then tilt it to the elevation figure, for me about 233 degrees mag and 34 degrees elevation, then look through the phone and see if you have a clear line of sight. Then move it 10 degrees left and right for the DTV install requirement. I think that is how it works.

You don't actually have to tilt the phone to any sort of azimuth or elevation. Just hold it approximately level and the application is smart enough to calculate the satellite positions. Hold the phone between you and the sky and you'll see where the satellites are relative to any obstructions. It's just like looking through a window.
