No, internet is not required for Directv. You won’t have access to on demand or have the ability to order movies with your remote but otherwise, internet not required.
You don't need internet at all for DirecTV. It is for optional On Demand.
If you get a Genie setup (since the 2nd generation HR44), it has a WiFi option built-in to make it easy to connect.
However if you prefer a wired setup, but not convenient to run a Ethernet cable between DirecTV box and router, then you may want internet already there so the tech can install a deca from the coax to your router.
