Do I need to return my access card to a different address?

The girl I spoke to at Directv today when I closed my account out said I had to mail back the Access Card from our main Genie receiver to a different address than the equipment and that I would receive the information in an email.  I never received any email from Directv.  I am not sure how to proceed...I do not want to be charged for any equipment/access card not returned.

That agent certainly didn't know what they were talking about. Full receivers (Genie, HDDVR) are a $135 and Mini Genie Clients $45 for their NRFs. No reason to remove access card unless you were recycling the box instead of returning. All Genies and Minis, except the 1st generation (HR34 and C31) are returnable.

From DirecTV's Equipment Lease Agreement for reference:

EQUIPMENT RETURN, NON-RETURN FEES.

What happens when I stop being a customer? Unless we instruct you in writing not to return your Leased Equipment, Leased Equipment must be returned in good working order, normal wear and tear excepted. If we haven't received your Leased Equipment within 21 days of termination of your Service, or if the Leased Equipment is returned in damaged condition, we will charge you $45 for each standard DIRECTV Receiver, each HD Receiver and each Genie Mini, and $135 for each DVR, HD DVR and Genie HD DVR and each Genie 2, so please attend to your Leased Equipment return promptly. We reserve the right to charge these fees to the credit or debit card you have on file with us. If you are leasing a DVR, HD or HD DVR Receiver and decide to terminate HD Access and/or any Advanced Receiver Service, as applicable, you agree to return that Advanced Equipment (and it will be replaced with standard receiver(s) if you are not terminating your Service), in accordance with this paragraph, or we will charge you the fees stated in this paragraph. Visit directv.com/legal or call 800.288.2020 for details.

That was wrong information.

You take DirecTV receiver/client boxes to a participating FedEx or UPS store for your free return. The access card stays in the box as they are paired. It would be super ridiculous to mail them separately. Just suggested to keep receipt showing they took possession of the boxes from you of course.

If a box is non-returnable, such as the 1st generation Genie (HR34), then you don't send the box itself back. But you might get an envelope within about 30 days to send back just the access card. This is a courtesy return, though is also to check on any unbilled PPVs that might still be on the card. Otherwise you just dispose of the access card securely similar to a credit card.

Non-return fees (NRF) are for the boxes themselves, not the cards, as only the boxes may be refurbished and issued out to another customer.

If you have not sent the box back yet, just put the card in it and return together. Otherwise after 30 days you are safe to get rid of the card.

Thank you for your quick reply. I mentioned to the representative 3 times, “are you sure the Access Card gets mailed separately?” She assured me that it does. And she said if they don’t receive the Access Card in 7 days, I would be charged $125.00. I just contacted my UPS store and they told me to bring the equipment in & they’ll take care of it. So I guess I’ll be sending the Access Card back with my Genie and pray I don’t get a bill for the Card. Thanks for your help.

She was an idiot Access cards are kept in the receiver and NEVER mailed separately except when only the access card needs returned and the value is only $20.00 for an access card.
