You can have multiple receivers, why do you think you can’t? You can only have one genie but you can have multiple genie clients or any other receiver, including DVRs.

The last DVR made before they started the Genie line is the HR24 DTV maybe out of them or will not activate them anymore.

Of course you can have multiple receivers. Who told you otherwise?
What are the models of any box you have?
Legacy DirecTV accounts have no limit, other than what you are willing to pay for. Newer accounts in the new system since AT&T acquired DirecTV have a limit of 7 devices (this covers receiver/DVRs, Clients, and even the headless server tower counts as 1).
The one exception is the Genie-2 (HS17). This is a headless server tower that feeds all Clients on the setup. It forbids other receiver/DVRs on the account. I keep hoping one day that DirecTV will come out with a newer SWM-only DVR/receivers that can work with the HS17 (or possibly a newer model of it). Since another company is now invested in ownership of DirecTV (so not just AT&T anymore), I am curious about equipment direction going forward.
But in general, yes you can have multiple receivers and/or DVRs. If you provide the model of your equipment, we could give more specific guidance.
Note: DVR is Digital Video Recorder, so DVR recorder is redundant like ATM Machine or PIN Number.

List your model Number of your receiver --then your question can be addressed: Use your remote --menu -settings --display (page down) to see the model number.

A correction on my earlier post, it is an 8 device (not 7) limit for the new account system. So the Genie-2 (HS17) could in theory use the maximum of 7 Clients it supports at one time making a total of 8 devices.

I have a dvr receiver in the den and they sent me a genie mini-r, model c61-500-r to replace the dvr that she had in the master bedroom! When I complained they said it was your policy not to have more than one dvr in a house. When I asked to speak to someone in management the customer service reps said " that's not possible".

You had a DVR replaced with a Mini Genie??? That is a downgrade.
It is not 'our' policy as this is a public forum of other customers. But it is not DirecTV's policy either, that agent had no clue what they were talking about. The only time you are restricted to Clients only (no traditional receiver/DVR) is if you have the Genie-2 (HS17). Any other Genie supports HDDVRs (including special R22) on the setup.
There have been some issues with activating replacement HDDVRs recently, but that has not been because of policy. I'm guessing some technical/programming issues in their systems currently that agents are just explaining in the simplest (though incorrectly) way possible.
What model is the box it was replacing as well as your other boxes? And why was it being replaced in the first place?

Sound like your Account is controlled By AT&T Stream and NOT D*TV

@Geraldblack3 please tell us what model of DVR did you have before the Genie mini?
