DVR

I have had my DVR  and genie for sometime. How often do they need to be upgraded? Also are they more compact now. I just bought a expensive stand and DVR is too deep to fit. So I can’t shut the door

What are your current equipment model numbers?

There is no upgrade to the Genie line as DTV is now installing the HS17 Genie2 server tower that doesn't connect to any TV and is a mini only system capped at 7 tuners and no PIP and has a few bugs to be worked out.  AFAIK the HR54 is the smallest Genie.

In general, boxes don't ever have to be upgraded. That is optional. Only those with old MPEG-2 (SD-only) equipment actually need to upgrade, but if you have a Genie then you have a MPEG-4 (SD and HD capable) setup so no change in equipment required.

However an upgrade, or warranty replacement might make the setup better for you. What are the exact models of boxes you currently have?

If you can tell us which DVR you have, it would give us an idea what's too large.  (The Genie is not planned for the cabinet or it's small enough?)

For reference, the latest/smallest DVR is the HR24 it's about Width: 15" x Height: 2.2" x Depth: 9.6"  (allow more space for cables connecting to the back.)

Heat in a closed cabinet is a problem.  My DVRs had erratic problems with the doors closed.

I put an extra fan in the cabinet for a while (the back of the cabinet was 1/2 open).
Now I just leave the front doors open all the time. (and extra space above & below)

I would recommend putting the receiver on top of the cabinet.

Another possibility would be to use a mini that slaves to the Genie (Should be a lot less space & heat).

(I would always recommend keeping both the DVR & Genie)

What are the models of you Genie and other boxes? This will narrow down the options you have to work with.

For example these are the Genie types; HR34, HR44, H44, HR54, and HS17 (avoid this one).
