External Hard Drive for hr24-500

I am trying to connect a Seagate 2tb STGX2000400 portable hard drive to my hddvr. I'm being told by the tech support that the hr24 is not compatible with any external hard drive.

I have tried formatting the drive first, as it doesn't have an external power option. I am trying to use the esata cablecable the drive to USB into the back of the DVR.

It is not recognizing the drive at all. Is this drive compatible, or do I need to get something else?

Thank you

You need an E-SATA enclosure preferably with a fan to use the E-SATA port on the HR24. weaknees.com sells them with hard drives also 2TB is the maximum that the HR24 can use.

Will any of the desktop type external 2tb hard drives work? How about the fantom dvr drives? I'm looking for the easiest option, as I'm not super computer savvy.

No. Reread @shannon02 's reply. Only external eSATA drives will work.

Tech support saying the HR24 was not compatible with any external drive was very wrong.

DirecTV HDDVRs support external drives that are eSATA with fan enclosure.

As drive is used instead of internal, must be larger to be worth it.

Regular HDDVR (like your HR24) has 500GB (less if much older model) and can use up to a 2TB drive.

Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54) has 1TB. Old notice suggested up to 4TB, but others have used up to 12TB.

Exception is a revised model (HR54R1) as doesn't have eSATA port, so this one doesn't support an external drive.

Thank you, we bought one and put it into an enclosure with a fan. It works perfectly. .. kinda loud though 😕. Thankfully it's in a spare room.
