No. DirecTV Genie DVRs only support external eSATA drives, not USB. And the latest HR54R1 version doesn't support any external drive (it has no eSATA port on the back).

Because of USB, the answer is no.
DirecTV regular HDDVRs and Genies support eSATA external drives (with fan enclosure). The one exception is the HR54R1, as this revised model of the HR54 doesn't have an eSATA port.
The external drive replaces the internal, so needs to be larger to be worth it. So a 1TB drive would be worthless on a Genie as that is the same size. This is to prevent unauthorized copying/transferring of recordings.
Regular HDDVR has 500GB (since HR22, less before then). Supports up to 2TB external.
Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54) has 1TB. Old notice showed suggested support up to 4TB external, but others have used 12TB and more successfully.
Genie-2 (HS17) has 2TB. Like regular Genie no listed hard cap on external. However, forbids regular HDDVRs so locked to one point of failure for your recordings. Not recommended.
