You don't. Software updates happen automatically when your Receiver is scheduled to get them. There's nothing you can do to speed up that process. Patience.

You'll know when the software version in the System Information display changes. And when you have the MRV Beta setup menu entry.

Not really. Somebody else cleared your machine for an update. Otherwise it would not have worked. It would have updated by itself the following night with no intervention..

to force a firmware update...

reset your box - (hit red button by access card)
when you see the 'hello' sign, quickly press 02468 on your remote. this intitiates a firmware download.

i've done this, it updates to the most current firmware (0x434d now) but in my area (Buffalo ny) its not showing up in my meny yet. Multiroom works fine on the 2 HD DVRS we have (HR22-100s) but not the H23-600 yet.

something to note-- if you don't have single line setup for your satellite- it also might prevent it from working. A directv tech told me that if you have the setup where you have 2 cables running to each box, it won't work properly with the H23-600 for multiroom. I don't know if this is true or not, they re-ran all ours to fix the multitoom issues on the H23-600 but turns out its just not going to work in our area yet.

The only time that forcing an update is warranted is when you're installing a new receiver that may have been sitting on the shelf for a time and thus may not have the current software on board. Otherwise, 99.9% of the time the forced update will simply get you a new copy of what you already have, along with the risk of a download failure that could render the receiver unusable. You also run the risk of accidentally downloading test software which could have any number of bugs in it and could damage your existing DVR recordings.
